Guest guest
There are available a few air purifiers for the car that have hepa filters and carbon filters. There is also a cabin filter from the manufactuer that can be changed frequestly. I have heard other talk of this : They say it has been very useful to them. Mostly for VOC's http://www.air-purifier-power.com/portable-air-purifiers.html Amaricare you can order VOC canister or blanket,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,they also have the cabin filters I believe by auto model. http://www.allergybuyersclubshopping.com/roomaid.html?itemId=287 Cabin filters are found behind an access panel in the AC duct housing, which may be under the hood or inside the cab. It will generally be on the passenger side. See your owner manual forcabin air filter not to be confused with the other filters.  God Bless !! dragonflymcs Mayleen
Guest guest
The contamination of the car may be coming from outside the car threw the ventilation system Whenever you drive you recirculation button should be on meaning it is closed, not coming in from outside. Change the cabin filter often and use an air purifier inside the car.  Keep car dry. So on damp days do not open your car to the envrionment. On dry days you may what to exchange the air in your car. Do it in a safe place, away from traffic, pollution, near the beach on a very dry day I feel helps. These are things that I have done to keep the car safe.  Have not had any problems. I know I may end up sleeping in it so I try very hard to keep it livable. The exposures you maybe experiencing may be coming from outside, molds are outside too, the reactions may not be from mold as you can get sensitized to others things as well. You have to figure out what Is causing the reaction, mold from outside, dampness moldy outside coming threw your recirculation system etc. When I became sensitive in my car I noticed what was going on around me at the moment. Recirculation button was a big problem.   God Bless !! dragonflymcs Mayleen ________________________________ From: Tug <tug_slug@...> Sent: Thu, August 12, 2010 12:22:00 AM Subject: [] Car and Car Air Conditioning/Re: more mold  This is an excellent question one that i was thinking of earlier. Guest guest
It is possible that the contamination is coming from outside the car. However, it is most likely that the AC system is contaminated. Fungi and Actinomycetes have been demonstrated in the A.C. system of automobiles. Guest guest
Dr. Thrasher, Do you know if there is a safe way to decontaminate a car a/c system that gets musty and how best to keep it clean? I've asked some remediation companies and those in my area say they do not work on cars. Thanks,Sam It is possible that the contamination is coming from outside the car. Guest guest
There is no simple way that I know. Perhaps Carl Grimes knows. The situations I have been involved in resulted in replacement of the AC system, particularly the condenser and confessor pans. You need to make sure that the condensation is draining from the collection pan. Some manufacturers mad the car AC a closed system and the pan does not drain or empty to the exterior. The collected water was allowed to evaporate with time. Guest guest
Carl-if this really works I am going to be so grateful to you! I am assuming the scent from this is unoffensive and non-toxic. Also I'm not super clear about the intake and I'm not exactly sure how to get it to exhaust but I will try this! Anyone following me knows that AC in cars are a BIG BIG problem for me-in fact I'm driving with a protective mask now because I can't afford a new car. Thank you!!!! Guest guest
Mayleen, I think I disagree with you on this. As you point out, many newer cars have cabin air filters. Most of these filter only outside air entering the AC, but do not filter recirculating air. If there is absolutely no dust in your car, great, no problem. But if there is dust, or perhaps you take a pet in the car, some of that dust and animal dander will enter the AC when it is on recirculate, potentially contaminating coils and drain pan, leading to mold growth. My car is a 1996 Ford Contour which has never been run on AC Max, recirculate. The AC still smells as fresh as when new. And AC mold is my worst trigger. As you point out, cabin air filters should be changed frequently. I have found that I can get 3 years or more on a filter if I spray a little Lysol on it before installation. I change it in the spring so I can drive with my windows open until the Lysol smell is gone. Without Lysol, filters are good for me for 18 months tops.
