Guest guest
first of all, calm down, take some deep breaths, next mentally delete the word extreme from your mind. by adding this word to the situation you are basicly causeing unneeded stress, to yourself and possably to others, cant speak for everyone here but it causes my anixity to go up to even here that word. first of all, getting out of the place that made you sick is less and less is always better. as far as what your getting exposed to from your belongings (if thats so) vs. liveing in the constant exposure situation you were in. you got to understand that getting out was the first step to getting better. NOT WORSE! BUT BETTER! if you have washed things over and over again, you might want to consider that cross contamination is not the problem. you can be reactive to other things you breath, and eat. tell us what you have brought with you that you fell is cross contaminated. how and what you washed them with, we need more information. if your convienced about the cross contamination thing have you considered putting your belongings in storage for awhile? if little things, store them in airtight plastic contaners for awhile, you might tolerate them better with time. that way you dont have to get rid of them, but if you fell they are causeing you reactions, you can find out by removeing them, storeing them, if that doesn't help, you well know theres others things in your environment that you are reacting to. also consider that for a while after you get out your body is still dealing with the exposure. how long have you been out of that place? cross contamination is not always the culprit. things can and well get better but it takes time. do you realize that you now are most likely reactive to other things in the environment, gases, purfumes, cleaning supplies, deoderants, shampoos, soaps, laundry soaps, ect. > > Does anyone else experience this? > > Im finding it hard to keep leaving everything behind all the time. I guess we become attached to our belongings as they remind us of who we are. How do others deal with this? > > I feel like leaving everything behind makes me a bit crazy. I dont know how to keep dealing with it. Im very tempted to just take the few belongings i have with me. The problem also is that with mcs its extremely expensive to buy new ORGANIC bedding and clothing everytime i move. I have say 5k savings and buying a few items of clothing and bedding costs $500 each time. Then there is the issue of supllememts, shoes etc etc, > > I almost feel i'd rather die than having to keep dealing with the anxiety any more and the disembodyment feelings i get when leaving everything behind. Guest guest
Thanks for the reply I dont feel like i cross contaminated when i came here at all, rather this is the 3rd house ive been in with a mold problem. The window sills are all black with mould on the bottom of the windows in the bathroom, bedrooms and loungeroom. Also there was a water from a pipe and there is black mould growing all over it. Its in one of the bedrroms and i got sick going in there. Its not as bad as the last two houses i have been in but i can smell the mustiness in the bathroom and sometimes loungeroom hence needing to move again. Im afraid now of taking my stuff with me to another house. There seem to be two camps here, one says to take minimal or nothing, others that things can be washed. Its frustrating, who to listen too? Its all so esoteric. If i make the wrong decision and just and take everything i could be worse cause wasing doesnt get rid of everything as there is more than just mould spores? Im very reactive to mould indoor and out and yes i do have mcs which is why everything needs to be organic. When i came here the formaldahyde on the new clothing was just too much. Having severe mcs means that the next house i go to is the only one ive been able to find in 6 weeks that is mould and chemical free since i cant handle houses that have been chemically cleaned, pesticide sprayed, refurbished etc. But im also wondering how people cope when they move houses and are they still vigilant. my mum is living in a really bad mouldy house and its going to be horrible if she cant visit due to her cross contaminating the house. I just find it hard to sort out the two camps and the differences of opinion, know what i mean? Once its done its done which is what causes me so much anxiety. What i would like to take is my supplements from original mouldy house, clothes from current mouldy house, leather bag, sheets, oxygen tank etc > > > > Does anyone else experience this? > > > > Im finding it hard to keep leaving everything behind all the time. Guest guest
Two things you said really resonated with me-I threw everything I owned out that was in a moldy basement. Books, pictures, a pool table, toys, tons of things I was saving for grandchildren, etc. I mourned that stuff for months. I cried when it got hauled out and then I mourned like someone died. It was extremely traumatic and I can't explain it. I still throw things out occasionally when they get moldy but it will never be as bad as that first time. I keep buying appliances-especially AC's-because they just keep getting moldy-it's so expensive that eventually I will stop using ac's probably. It's not worth it. But bedding is essential-I know this is going to sound trite but lately I keep things outside in the sun for a month. My bedroom chest drawer got moldy (I don't know how) and I just can't throw out my bedroom set (not yet anyway) so I left the drawer out in the sun. It worked (wasn't too contaminated, just a smell, no stains). If you have the time and a place to do it, can you rotate bedding? Leave a set outside for a month then switch? Sometimes the simple solutions work really well (don't be angry if it sounds like I'm minimizing your problem-I'm not just for me I need to hear all ideas so I can figure it out). Having said that, I think it's the mold that made me feel like that and it's the mold that is making you feel suicidal. I know now that it was the huge amounts of mold that made that situation so unbearable. Mold screws with your head. You need to know that and accept that totally. I felt suicidal in my worst times-I can even tell you what I would have written on my suicide note and how I planned to do it. But then I got rid of the major mold problem and, though it took a year at least, I came out of it. Now when I feel depressed I say " it's the mold, it's the mold " and try to wait it out. It's horrible. But it helps to know it's not you-IT'S THE MOLD! Good luck, Surella > > Does anyone else experience this? > > Im finding it hard to keep leaving everything behind all the time. Guest guest
Thank you Surella, I'm not normally an anxious person like this. It just seems that there are no answers to all rhis. The house im moving into has AC too which i just hate the idea of. Never lived in an air cinditioned house before and i hate the thought of how quickly it could spread any mould or grow it. Why do your acs keep getting moldy? How long have you been out of the wdb and are you recovering? The suicidal feelings are rare and yes im sure come from the mold but also just knowing that im getting worse here and having very few housing options open due to the mcs. I know of others who've been looking for a year for appropriate mcs safw housing and in meantime are still living in mouldy houses. So.. When i find somewhere promising i want to make sure i dont cross contaminate know what i mean? I wish more people would chime in on this.vi wish someone knowledgable could say definatively whether its possible to clean clothes and non porus items instead of it just being different opinions from different people and no clear cut answers. Really i feel like saying to hell with it and not even washing anything cause im sick to death of thinking about mold, and its not just mold but all the other stuff. I hate all the anxiety that builds in me. I suppose i will take very little and try to explain it to the next lot of people im staying with and try and deal with the financial losses yet again. You say you threw out all the stuff in your basement, did you keep things in the rest of your house? Yes i find it very traumatic to throw everything out, maybe it wouldnt be so bad if i had somewhere permanent to go, hadnt lost my ability to work, had a partner who was coming with me, finances and didnt have to leave town and everyone here that i love to afford somewhere to rent. It would be easier to throw out if i knew i was going to be able to rebuild instead of being in limbo. Know what i mean? > > Two things you said really resonated with me-I threw everything I owned out that was in a moldy basement. <snip>
Guest guest
It's so tough to know what to take and alot of this is trial and error with us being the ones that suffer if we make a mistake. That's the best we can do though. PS both my son AND daughter live in moldy houses. My daughter literally just bought a house with so much mold that the one and only time I visited my legs shook for 24 hours after. She has a new baby too and I will never ever see them now. It's awful and they are actually angry at me-especially my son-in-law, he doesn't believe me at all. > > Thanks for the reply > I dont feel like i cross contaminated when i came here at all, rather this is the 3rd house ive been in with a mold problem. > > The window sills are all black with mould on the bottom of the windows in the bathroom, bedrooms and loungeroom. Guest guest
Yes, I know what you mean! I also can't work and spent a couple of years fighting the mold in my house. But it's SO scary to move, right? So I tried to stay and I don't have any savings anymore but I stayed. My husband is still with me but you gotta know it's not the same anymore. I threw out alot of stuff-mostly the basement. For some reason, even though the mold spores came up to the first floor, nothing got contaminated. I can't explain it because you know, if it had bothered me I would have thrown it out! There were things that I stayed away from upstairs-my husband's office was too dusty for me-I can't tolerate paper dust; I couldn't sit on my sofas for the longest time because the fabric was just too dusty. I'm not a bad housekeeper just some things hold dust-the reason i ripped up all my carpeting too. I changed all the florescent light fixtures because I couldn't tolerate them. So there was alot I got rid of upstairs but not because of the mold. I have very bad luck with my AC's-2 went because my neighbor did construction and the dust landed on my ac's and mold grew. It was also the worst hot summer in NY and the ac probably had alot more condensed water after being shut off. I now know not to shut it off immediately-let it run on fan to dry the condensed water. The cars ac's I just don't know. Another ac had a design flaw that had the water pooling on the bottom-stupid. I remediated my house successfully. It took all my money and alot of time but moving, at the time, seemed scarier to me. So now I live with a bare clean basement with no walls, floors or anything in it except for 2 dehumidifiers. But the war against mold goes on for me. There was mold behind a kitchen cabinet because a piece of insulation had gotten wet during my construction 20 YEARS AGO! There was mold in my washing machine-I don't know how. There was mold in my husband's synagogue and I was sick for weeks till I figured out why I got sick when he came home-now he's banned from there. I had a leak in the kitchen and the water just barely touched the cabinets and I had to throw out a whole moldy side of my kitchen-nightmare. On and on. Don't even get me started on VOC's! Guest guest
Hi K, I am so sorry to hear all that you are going through. I go through similar feelings regularly. On the one hand, I try to tell myself that it's just stuff; that buddhists tell us that suffering is caused by attachment, and what am I feeling but attachment, and attachment to stuff, which holds no real meaning but the meaning I ascribe to it? On the other hand, I too am having a hard time financially--and the thought of replacing everything is a real hardship. And that paralyzing feeling--what if I move and nothing gets solved? All too familiar to me. I had a mind to move, then I was scared, and now I am back to moving--the illness drives me. The insufferable denial that I keep getting from others, ignorant people I might add, drives me. I don't have any really good advice, guidance, or answers. Except that, when you get stuck in a moment of reiterating thoughts, rumination that just keeps you spiraling, try to do something that makes you feel good--even if its just listening to a bit of music--and come back to the issues when you aren't feeling so vulnerable. Kind thoughts, AN Make an island of yourself, make yourself your refuge; there is no other refuge. Make truth your island, make truth your refuge; there is no other refuge. Digha Nikaya, 16 P.S. The references to buddhism aren't intended to intrude on anyone's religious beliefs. Many nuns, priests, pastors, and clergy incorporate buddhist thought into their practices and beliefs. Guest guest
I was in your exact situation many years ago. I also couldn't imagine ever finding an environment in which I could ever live and function. I shared the same terrible thoughts, that you now have, which were brought on by my depression. My toxic mold-triggered illnesses drove me into insanity, and my insanity justified, in the mind of everyone around me, that my insanity had made me imagine all the illnesses that I claimed to have. My past experiences, which YOU are experiencing now, are all a distant memory of the past. I no longer even have the nightmares about my past, that I used to have. I am now healthy. And you will be healthy too! When you are healthy, in your future, those friends and relatives, who stick by you, through your present ordeal, and are still in your life, when you are a healthy person, will still consider you to be a " crazy person " , but a " crazy person " who can carry on a normal conversation. Don't expect them, in the future, to ever acknowledge the physical suffering that you are experiening NOW. Just accept that your experience, and mine, was too different from anything that they have ever experienced, to allow them to know YOUR truth. Hold on to their friendship, in any case,as the disembodyment feelings, that you describe, has only one antidote: " human contact and human warmth " . If you can only obtain this antidote, from people who think you are crazy, then accept the antdote, anyway. It works for me. Guest guest
The worst thing I did was keep struggling to " replace " my old life. Of course no one knows until they try if doing so will be possible or not. But there went all my money, trying to get a home, apt , or studio so I could work. Now I accept that for me, none of the things I used to do will work for me. It has taken 8 years to get there. I have thrown away all my things 3 times. Maybe 3 and a half. I have stopped crying and learned to endure. I live in a small metal building with no interior walls or insulation. If I don't keep it really clean and go over it with a blowtorch a few times a week, I get sick. All my limited furniture is metal. It is winter, and I am cold a lot, but better than last year when I was sleeping in the truck with no tent. I am not recommending this lifestyle to anyone. Just telling you that the major problem I had was trying to get it all back. People must access their own situation, and do what is best for their health. Don't hold up the past as an example of what you need. Your body will tell you what it needs now. karen > > Hi K, I am so sorry to hear all that you are going through. Guest guest
What a nightmare with your ongoing fight against mold! Im so sorry this has happened to you. It must be very disheartening and a constant source of distraction for you. I hope that you have made some gains by at least cleaning the basement and keeping it mold free. Its the neverending vigilance that we will have to maintain for the rest of our lives.
Guest guest
Thanks An, i know the answers arent easy to come by but it does help to talk. Yes its the expense of having to replace everything. I have so much i could take with me that could help... Supplements which are undoubtably helping my health, organic bedding etc. Its so frustrating to leave it behind. Sorry that you are facing similar dilemas. Also i want my mum and boyfriend to be able to stay since its a 5 hour drive but since they are both in moldy houses i cant see how they could without me provding clothes for thier stay and instructing them to bring nothing with them! Thats another reason why emotionaaly it would be a lot easier to bring everything and keep an open door policy with the rest of the world, not having to worry about cross contamination. Already my mum is talking about staying for 5 days after xmas and to have to tell her yes you can do that but you must shower, change clothes and brng nothing is so crazy. But, i got very sick in her house too from mold. Ugh.

Guest guest
C there's no reason why you have to get rid of your suppliments, put them in a zip lock after you leave the moldy house but before you enter the new one. Your second problem can be easily solved but can be expensive. Your going to have to buy new clothes for your mother and your b/f beings you know what I just went through I would wait till you detox somewhat and you can better handle small amounts of spores/micotoxins. > > Thanks An, i know the answers arent easy to come by but it does help to talk. Guest guest
This is exactly what I do. In order to see my grandchildren I have told my kids to bring them but that I will change their clothes here and that none of their belongings come into my house. Consequently, when my daughter had the new baby (it's a boy!) her son stayed with me for a week and his stuff stayed outside my house the whole time. I laid all his clothes out on the back steps just in case but I didn't use anything. I have a small wardrobe for him in my house and he wears only my stuff. It's ridiculous that both my kids should live in moldy houses but there it is. Ask your mom if she would mind leaving her stuff out in the fresh air and not in the house and if she can bring freshly washed clothes sealed in a bag to wear (this works occasionally-in general everything still has a touch of mold). Good luck, Surella > > Thanks An, i know the answers arent easy to come by but it does help to talk. Yes its the expense of having to replace everything.
