Guest guest
Colleagues, A paradigm to consider: human metabolism has evolved to store fat and minimize lean mass. The natural selection strategy for feast-famine cycles is to store energy (hence the role of adipose)and limit the amount of tissue with high metabolic cost (like muscle). This is a result of our hunter-gatherer ancestry and probably worked well when our survival depended on moving more regularly - in which case energy expenditure would have been higher throughout the typical day, and the stimulus to build or maintain lean mass was constantly present. Now, however, our lifestyle makes this mechanism more problematic. The take home message is that we need to trick this mechanism to an extent in order to selectively lose fat while maintaining (orgaining) muscle. The hormonal cascade triggered by food intake can be an even more potent stimulus than training. Together, food and training can be used to significantly change body composition. The key is to vary calorie intake as well as training stress, a concept Dr. Siff described as " chrononutrition " .
