Guest guest
In response to the mattress question. The mattress was great for half of the night. By the next morning I was sleeping in a huge hole. The foam had formed around my body and I felt like I was sinking, odd feeling. As I got up I think every bone in my body popped back into place. From sleeping in the " hole " I had not moved during the night. But that is just one person's experience. HELLO! Guest guest
I bought one of thhe toppers for my bed that is supposed to be identical to the temperpedic.but it is inly a couple of inches thick. I love it. My arms would get the circulation cut off from the regular mattress. Now I never have the problem my back never is sore in the morning either. We bought a topper for my friends hospital bed when she became bedridden and her wasted body had alot of pressure points that were about to turn into bedsores, the topper made her final days just a bit more comfortable.I guess if there were any doubt you could do the free test run they offfer. I think its a month or so.I wonder if that is enough time to decide.. Two years ago we bought the top of the line Tempur-pedic and we just got rid of it and went back to a Seely. In the Temper-pedic my arms and shoulders would go to sleep so badly that it would wake me up and I would have to stand up to wake them up. I would get out of bed in the morning and literally not be able to take a step for several minutes because my back hurt so bad. One month on the Seely and all that has stopped. I found out that Tempur-pedic has one of the highest return rates so forwarned is forearmed. ---------------------------------

Guest guest
They stalled us around with different suggestions to try until it was too late. Maybe the toppers are better than the whole mattress. I always felt like I was sleeping in a hammock and they seems to hold too much heat. All I know is that with the Tempur-pedic I never slept thru' the night and now I rarely ever wake up at night. Guest guest
Yes it was the memory foam. Maybe you will have better luck than we did but it sure was an expensive mistake. We just love our Seely Posturpedic and the nice thing about it is that if we didn't we had 90 days to exchange it for another mattress. If you are contemplating a Tempur-pedic go to Mattress Firm if possible. They carry them and if you hate it you can exchange it for something else until you are happy. Guest guest
I have had a different experience with my Tempur-pedic mattress, than what mentioned. She didn't sleep through the night on it - but with me, I never slept through the night *before* the Tempur-pedic, I would get up at least a couple times a night. But ever since the Tempur-pedic, I sleep right through, every night. And my arms or legs never go to sleep now, as they used to occasionally. I guess it all depends on the individual person - everybody is so different - different shapes and sizes - I guess if anyone is interested, to just try it out and see if you like it. Guest guest
To get chemical-free mattresses in the US you need a prescription. I don't know about in Canada. Guest guest
I just ordered an organic cotton mattress with a latex mattress topper from abundantearth.com which is made by royalpedic.com. I haven't received it yet. I have no commercial interest in any of the following products/sites. The Abundant Earth price was lower than the price I could get with my designer's license through the local distributor. I researched this for a few weeks, including scouring all the info on the antimony and arsenic group. My conclusions for mattresses (not futons): Select Comfort air beds are a good, low-chemical choice, but still have some chemicals. Royal Pedic all-natural latex beds are truly chemical-free and available without wool (wool, particularly New Zealand wool, has a lot of arsenic in it). However, the latex does break down over time, which is not ideal for such an expensive bed. Royal Pedic all cotton innerspring mattresses are very hard and uncomfortable (to me). However, with a latex topper they are very comfortable. So, I ordered the latex topper and plan to replace it every 3-7 years, depending on how fast it breaks down. Let me know if I can help further. Guest guest
" Select Comfort air beds are a good, low-chemical choice, but still have some chemicals. " Dawn, FYI, Select Comfort has a mold problem in their air chambers. Anyone who has one needs to periodically unzip the covers, allowing the chambers to " air out " , otherwise the moisture build-up gives mold a foothold. SC basically admits this on their site, giving encouragement and information on how to go about routinely airing out the beds. Then again, any bed can be a playground for mold - one reason why we never make ours. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. -Sharon, NH Deut 11:14 He will put grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will have plenty to eat. The organic latex mattresses I got are the most comfortable things ever. I love them. My daughter's is going on 3 years old, has been bounced on, peed on, thrown up on, etc., and still going strong. Guest guest
We just have an egg crate overlay on top of our matress. Our box springs are very old and squishy, which seems work well for us. Our bed is very bouncy though. It's kind of like sleeping on a trampolene, and I get tossled whenever Lee climbs in or out of bed or turns over. But I guess I've gotten used to it, and I find our bed *very* comfy. I've slept on a Comfort Select bed at my mother-in-law's and thought it was great. It's just a little too pricey for our budget though. Jenn
Guest guest
Hey Peggy~ I was going to buy one until my last trip out to Atlanta...we met and became friendly with the GM of the hotel we were staying in and she was telling us all about how The Radisson Hotels have them in their rooms and are a constant problem...Make lots of noise and have trouble with leaky valves, etc. I am sure that they are more abused in a hotel than they would be at home...or not, hahaha! When we had gone to the store the first time the salesman stated that the beds were strictly ones that were being rotated due to change in fabric. I was glad to have met the hotel GM she also told us that if you buy one of their demo beds (from sleep by number) they are ones that have come out of the hotels and off the floor or have been returned...they can't be returned, but they put new outside covers on them. We proceeded to go to sleep by number again and saw a different salesperson who confirmed what we were told. I really would have liked it but my husband was not buying it! We went out today and bought a Beautyrest....I am hopeful that it will be good, as we are also sleeping on a mattress and boxspring from when the Earth was cooling. I hope that you are able to find a good one! Let me know what you end up with! Good luck! Guest guest
We bought one a couple of years before my revision surgery. It helped me get some sleep when no other bedding could; I hurt too much. We have a king size model and should the house ever catch fire, I’m saving the bed. It’s the best, in my humble opinion. Guest guest
Peggy, shortly before my '06 revision I spent a long time trying every mattress in the big furniture store and found quite a few that felt good while lying on my back, but the real test was on my side. They all hurt when I lay on my side for a while (and at that point I really had to sleep mostly on my side), except for their firmest Beautyrest. That's the one with the individual pocket coils that prevent hammocking and support your whole body evenly. We were replacing an older Beautyrest, which was made before they started making them all with pillow tops and which had a poor foundation so I had to have a bed board (which is a very cheap way to make an older or cheaper mattress support your back better). I did try the Sleep Number bed, as well as the Tempurpedic, and couldn't get comfortable, though others in the group have said they love Tempurpedic. 2 1/2 years later I still love my Beautyrest. The other thing I don't regret is I replaced our king size set with a pair of long twins that we keep pushed together like a king. (We don't bother with a headboard, etc.) Now I never get wakened by a restless hubby, but can still cuddle at will! I also got Protect-A-Bed covers for the mattresses. They say mattresses gain a lot of weight over years of use, because they get full of dead skin cells and dust mites. Gross! And also really important to know if you're allergy-prone. Guest guest
Peggy, FWIW, my husband and I love our Tempurpedic. I loved it both before and after surgery for the way it kind of " holds " my body in a good suppport position. As Sharon said.... for a side sleeper like me having good support of the hips/lumbar spine really can make a difference in a nights sleep. And my husband and I agree that one of us moving does not " telegraph " to the other person. He is a light sleeper and since he is often on the road and sleeping alone he used to get awoken many times on our old mattress when I would turn, or get up to use the bathroom. We bought the least expensive model, not the deep mattress...just an 8 " one with their platform boxspring. I did spend one night on a sleep number bed in a hotel and was not favorably impressed as my side was not working and I was unable to change the #. I felt that spoke to the quality of the beds....I mean is it really a good thing to have a mattress that depends on moving parts/electricity for comfort? I will say that while we were away last week I noticed that I am not as bothered by beds that dont strictly meet my needs anymore. I was in 4 different beds and while each were good quality, apparently newish with some form of " topping " ...I was able to get comfortable on all. That wouldn't have been possible even 2 years ago. No matter what you do....go to your proposed stores, plan to bring a book and spend 30-60 mins on your " targets " before you make up your mind! Guest guest
I am a side sleeper too. And I usually have a cat perched on my hip while I am sleeping so that adds to the weight. Do you think the Tempurpedic mattress would be more supportive than my 4 inch memory foam topper? Peggy [ ] Re: mattresses Peggy,FWIW, my husband and I love our Tempurpedic. Guest guest
Yes, they are, but we feel the benefits of not hurting, getting good sleep, and being able to adjust to our own individual needs are worth every penny. We couldn’t believe how much $ we’d spent on different mattresses/brands trying to find something that worked for us. Since Sleep Number offered us the ability to try it out for 30 days (or was it 60? Can’t remember) with the option of getting all our money back if it didn’t work for us, we didn’t see we had anything to lose. And we didn’t. We’ll buy the brand again when it has to be replaced. Guest guest
Go to tone.com - you can get the full tempurpedic set and 2 free pillows and you have 90 days to try it for free. I did - it didn't work for me and after 2 months we called, they picked it up. No shipping charges or anything if you don't want it so it's a great way to test it out. EveSent from my iPodOn Feb 28, 2009, at 5:59 PM, "cammaltby" <cammaltby@...> wrote: Peggy, Well, the thing about the Tempur is that there really isn't any pressure back up against your hips...so you never wake up with that feeling that your shoulder or hip has been pressing against a firm object. I would advise you to be aware that there are many sales people that will gladly sell you am imitation Tempupedic. Don't be tempted. Also, Tempurpedic had a very generous 30day return policy, which gives you enough time to sleep on it and make an infomred decision. You should check and verify that is still the case if you go this route. I think other reputable companies do this too...so no matter what you choose, make sure you can return for full refund...you just never know until you spend a few nights on a bed! Guest guest
Hi Peggy, Several years ago, I treid a Tempurpedic mattress and hated it. The store was true to the 30 day refundable policy and picked up the mattress the day after I called them, no questions asked. I wound up with the second to softest Sealy Posturpedic. I still love it. All this conversation goes to show that what works for one doesn't necessarily for another person. Cam is right: prepare to spend a lot of time at the mattress store. I went to the same store two days in a row, smiled nicely at the sales people and asked them to please leave me alone until I asked for attention. I then spent almost two hours on each of the two days laying on the mattesses. Good luck in your search. Bonnie

Guest guest
I have a sleep number mattress and LOVE IT!!! It gets in the smallest areas of my back and gives me support like no other. I stay at the high end of number options and never wake up with any back pain. Also, my husband is a restless sleeper and I never feel him turning over or shaking the whole bed. I do have a flatback from spinal fusion. Good luck....
