Guest guest
I just started homeschooling my 10 year old. He would be going into 4th grade. Here's what I am using:* Teaching Textbook Interactive Math DVDs 4 (you can get 1st grade too)* BrainPop.com for math, language arts, science and social studies. I don't like their quizzes but, it is great video learning for many subjects. They have activities and experiments to go along with each video too.* Time4Learning.com for math, language arts and science. They have a preschool and a 1-3rd grade area. I love their interactive videos and quizzes.* Many worksheets are found online to supplement areas I find he is struggling withI am using many science experiments I have found in books as part of unit studies we are doing* I am also using several DVDs I purchased online and get at the library for things like science and social studies units* I have found several things on the Internet (videos and such) to supplement learning as well!LoriSubject: need advice on an old topicTo: autism-aspergers Date: Saturday, July 28, 2012, 4:22 PM I have missed several posts over the summer and I am sure this is one that is common. I want to homeschool my autistic granddaughter and I need advice on what curricullum has worked for others. Please let me know. School starts in 10 days and I am in a panic. She did good in kindergarten but she did pick up bad behaviors from others and I cringe to think what will happen in firstgrade.
Guest guest
Oh and you do need to let the principal know of your intentions. You need to withdraw her from the school district and let them know where she would be going (ie your homeschool name)...but, call it a private school. Then, a few days later you should request all her records. You just don't want to be considered truant! ;-)LoriSubject: need advice on an old topicTo: autism-aspergers Date: Saturday, July 28, 2012, 4:22 PM I have missed several posts over the summer and I am sure this is one that is common. Guest guest
Do you need something that is completely open and go, so that you don't have to prepare anything? Can she handle workbooks? I'll post more later, forgot I have to go to the store! T. > > I have missed several posts over the summer and I am sure this is one that is common. Guest guest
A----why does school start so soon in 10 days? and B---if you are in the states check out Connections Academy....public online cyber charter. They are really quick about getting everything out to you! My son finished on a Friday and started on a Monday...pulled him during Christmas break or shortly after. Does she need special Ed? They have that too!! Guest guest
She goes to main stream most of the time and has so many hours a week in special ed. She can learn on a normal rate and is actually advanced in learning. She is socially that of a three year old and can't keep up emotionally with pers. Out of the special ed class, she was the only one to advance. This past year she was beaten black and blue by another child and when that child apologized, she thought it was alright and that even though it was bad, it was made right by the apology. She has no concept of bad. Her school councelor said she is what is called a purest in the most purest form. Plus she has no fear of strangers and doesn't know what fear is. I honestly thought school started at the end of the month but when I called Friday, they said it starts on the 6th. She has regressed some over the summer and I feel she is not prepared for the first grade. Guest guest
We also homeschool our 8yo son who has Aspergers. You didn't mention what state you live in. You need to file with your local school district. I wouldn't necessarily worry about school starting in 10 days. You should be able to pull her out of school at any given time if you think your child is in danger (OMG! Beaten black and blue?)- whether it's day 1 or day 101! As long as you file the proper paperwork you will be fine. As far as curriculum, last year was our first year. Since I wasn't sure if it would work out, I just bought all the books he would be using in public school off of Amazon (mostly used). I also wanted the continuity from 1st grade. I think I spent $80 total. We just plodded through the year. It was relatively painless, but I will say it got pretty boring. This year we're still waiting to hear if we got into the K12 online public school. You may have this option in your state. It is really wonderful and often completely free (not in VA- it's $500). They mail you all your curriculum and provide teacher support. I noticed Calvert School also has a public school option in some states as well. If we don't get into the K12 program, we'll be using the homeschool K12 option for some of our classes (lang arts, music, science), Saxon math, and The Story of the World with activity book and test book for history. I strongly recommend checking out the Workbox Method for kids with autism. It works wonderfully for our son. They have complete control over when their work is done for the day. Good luck and email me if you have any questions. Kristy in VA > > I have missed several posts over the summer and I am sure this is one that is common. Guest guest
Do a Google search for homeschool groups specific to your state, if you find one that's probably your best source for finding out what your compliance and notification requirements are. I don't belong to the Homeschool Legal Defense Association, but I think their website offers a breakdown of laws state by state also. Your state's department of education may have additional information. As an aside, I think our schools in the area are starting back sometime mid-August. Guest guest
I homeschool my daughter who is now doing a mix of first and second grade work at age six. She likes structure so we start the day with worksheets (liked workbooks like Daily Science and Daily Math from Evan Moor) and in the afternoon she reads to me and I read to her (history, science, stories). When she was learning to read (kindergarten), she liked starfall.com (it is a free learning site for learning reading). She liked to learn to read with Bob books (kindergarten) and she also liked flashcards (kindergarten). She liked workbooks for math together with an abacus. Now I am using Horizons Math and Abeka may also work for math (Grade One and Two).I think you will find that she does well in homeschooling because the one on one time helps with bonding and she won't be held up in her learning due to problems caused by stressful interactions that she doesn't understand. You could check out Sonlight curriculum for readers (listed by age/grade) that the child gets to read to you (they have a good selection). I would be selective about what books you order from them to read to your child. I liked some of their history books but not all. For instance, I did not like A Child's view of History (preferred The Story of the World by Wise Bauer) but I did like the Usbourne books they had on history and science.I also liked some of their literature but not all. ie. My daughter loved Detectives in Togas and I enjoyed reading it to her as much as she liked to listen. But I didn't much care for Miss Piggle Wiggle. So I am in future going to try to see if I can get a look at books that I am to read to her before ordering from them so I just order the ones I like.Abeka is very structured but may be boring so they can be used selectively. I did not want to use their readers for my daughter to learn to read because I thought she would be bored. But I am using some of their math and some of their language books. If you are near a Mardel's bookstore go check out their workbooks. They have a great selection (good variety) and you can decide what is appropriate. You should join a local homeschool group for support and feedback now (for Grade One) so you can get help selecting materials you like and for support later when you want to get advice on what co-ops/classes may be safe to try at Grade Three level for your grand-daughter if you continue homeschooling up to that grade.Best of luck,ta.
