I once had a jug of this type and it came with its own  very large rubber band

which if you were cafeful would stay in place.  If the band is too tight it

will slip off the top.   You could try creating a longer band by attaching

multiple  rubber bands until you get the desired length.   This is the main

drawback  for this kind of jar.  Otherwise it makes great KT.

Subject: any ideas for a secure top?

I use this 2.5 gal jug for making my KT. I want to secure the top with a

band or something around the cotton cloth I lay over the opening but there

is nothing to secure the band and it keeps slipping off the jug. Anyone

have any ideas? I would sure appreciate it.

Thanks,

There are long rubber bands available at office supply stores that are

used to bind manuscripts together in the publishing industry. I've seen

them recently in an Office Depot here in the states. They are sold

where the other rubber bands are. They work great for the large crocks,

lip or no lip. If no lip, just put the band farther down the crock

instead of right near the top.

Also putting several rubber bands together as Zoe mentions works just fine.

how about some of those little fishing weights, with the alligator clip, hang

them evenly on the edges of  whatever your using to cover it?

Great suggestions you guys. Thanks much! I will keep all those in mind.

Guess what I came up with while thinking more about it??? First I thought a

bungee cord, but that didnt work. It was too taught. So then I saw this

thin belt; the kind with the double rings on the end, instead of a buckle.

Works fantastic! Got it nice and tight.

Thanks again,

V

Most fishing weights are lead-- you don't want those around your food.

Every time you handle something with lead it stays on your hands and

transfers to anything else you touch.

All you need is a big rubber band.

My thots are that the band you are using is too small. Go to Staples and get a

pack of the large ones that are the pick for holding folders and binders closed.

This is the kind of vessel I have and I happened to just buy a pack of these

sized rubber bands for holding a towel on a mixing bowl when I thought of trying

one on my crock because fruit flies still get in there. Arrgh! They work and it

has been on there for weeks without popping off.
