Guest guest
Talk to Melody and . They say that you don't know what is put on them as they are not planned for human consumption. Wonder if you got them at an organic market if it would make any difference. I read once that people who do feed birds should put cayenne on the seeds as it doesn't bother the birds but keeps the squirrels from eating the seeds. Funny thing was i got a squirrel feeder and put in peanuts and the birds liked that and the squirrels went to the bird feeders. Both liked the corn I put out which was supposed to be for squirrels. It was blue jays I really enjoyed watching with the peanuts. They would break them open and eat them. They loved the peanuts. We got raw of course, in the shell. If my husband wasn't out there first thing in the morning to feed them, they sure yelled at him when he did come out.  We don't get many exciting birds at our place in Florida. We have the occasional ibises that come down to the ground to feed, but our most common birds are crows and morning doves. The doves are one of my husband's favorite but we don't have many trees for them to hide in. They like the pines. We can't afford to feed birds like we used to as it cost us about $50-100 a month in seed. I enjoyed the gold finches. They also stayed year round like the cardinals. Never saw a bluebird there. had a lot of nut hatches and woodpeckers which we loved to watch. We miss them here. But we do go to the swamp lands and see all kinds of birds in a wild preserve like cranes and an Eagle and a variety including a roseated spoonbill (our favorite). Then there are the gators and the turtles too. It is a nice walk of a mile or two though we may have to take a walker or a scooter anymore. path is all boardwalk. We take visitors there and it is free. There are 3 or 4 of the preserves in Palm Beach County.  Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Monday, March 26, 2012 1:56 PM Subject: Black Oil Sunflower Seed for Sprouting  Hi all... I've done a search through the forum here and couldn't find this topic addressed... I've been reading that a lot of people like sprouted sunflower seeds. I've never tried them. I was in my local supermarket the other day and saw that they had 10lb bags of Black Oil Sunflower seeds for birds for sale for around $5. It made me wonder if we could use these for sprouting. Would this seed be OK to sprout? I would suspect that if it was for birds, that there wouldn't be anything wrong with sprouting them for ourselves. Has anyone sprouted these or does anyone know if these can be sprouted and eaten without us humans growing feathers?.. ) Just curious... Guest guest
EW, the article said they did, so the article may have been wrong. Gives me something to research. Holly
