Joe , D-2nd District, announced Friday that the City of New London has secured a $200,000 grant to protect children and families from home health hazards. The funding, from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), will be used to address housing-related hazards, such as accidental injury, mold and moisture, and carbon monoxide poisoning. " This funding will help the City of New London educate citizens about household dangers, and ensure that children are safe in their homes, " said in a news release. " The City of New London has done tremendous work on this issue for quite some time, and the fact that they secured this funding in such a competitive environment is a testament to their hard work and focus. " New London is one of only 10 communities to receive the grant through HUD's Healthy Homes Production program. " We are looking forward to working with more New London residents to ensure their homes are as safe as can be,'' said Cara Hatfield Pianka, the city's community development coordinator. " The New London Healthy Homes Program will provide the funds necessary for us to expand our Lead Hazard Reduction Program and remediate mold and asbestos problems as well as help to prevent fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.
