Dear Amy,

I certainly saw a lot of biting as Will and grew up. I still see it occasionally when they feel frustrated about conveying their anxieties or fears. Even though it's painful, the biting is often a form of communication rather than aggression or retaliation. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with Down syndrome or your competence as a parent.

School people are supposed to be aware of this. Sending the biter to the principal's office or sending him or her home, when anxieties are involved, is the wrong procedure. I hope that doesn't happen with your girls. If the teacher{s) is (are) worried, you might ask for a behavioral assessment to determine the antecedents to the biting activity and try to change the circumstances.

(I wonder how many people who read this already know it. Sometimes I'm preaching to the choir.)

Hello everyone!

Irene, thank you for compiling the list. I take the blame for the

omission as I am unsure where I actually sent the address to in the

first place! I just really appreciate someone taking the time to

organize this because it is so uplifting everyday when you go to the

mailbox and see more pics of the kids! I have received a few already

and I love them!! Thank you so much. Also, anyone have problems with

the child biting in school. I thought we would be passed that stage,

but in the past few weeks, Calli has bitten three students at school.

She does not bite at home or at the daycare. Apparently she is either

trying to hug and if they pull away, she bites or if the student is

pulling at her. Any suggestions? Hope you all have a wonderful

holiday.
