I guess I was really lucky. I hired a pair of counselors from Camp Joy and

had them for 6 years. We also got capped waiver funding of $22,000 (approx)

for camp, respite, and habilitation. I hired them, wrote the training

program, paid $13/hr and had them for 6 years. they also kept Elie so we

could go on vacation (part of my 30 days a year of overnite respite.

Now, I got $2,500 for the year for camp and respite. I can hire my own

people but it ishard even though I am in a college town. My hab worker gave

notice yesterday as of yesterday!!!! Wait until Thursday comes and I have

to explain to ELie why isn't coming. And it is the end of the year

so not much luck at the college.

On top of that, my husband is having surgery the 31st of May(Thursday). He

should be in the hospital aat least 3 days (if we are lucky and the angels

fly) But Elie's camp ends Friday evening. We have to be in Atlanta for pre

admit testing.

So I am trying to negotiate with this woman who occasionally stays with Elie

in the evening as a " safety protector " (she will get him out of the house if

it burns but basically beyond fixing a meal, she doesn't interact with Elie.

)I hope she will get him from camp and stay at the house with him for a

couple of days. Not a great solution, but I do not want him in ATL or at

the hospital.

Life is tooooooo complicated.

Sara, not need to apologize, close enough. I knew who you meant. I can't get my

Hi Sara,

I hear you but you could say he is cognitively impaired but has mastered

-----this year. If you use the word retarded in describing Elie it will have

less effect to the reader what he has mastered or has any ability.

Regarding the reading piece, I know Elie can do all these things. According to

the experts that I directed this issue toward, I was told that a common error in

teaching students with DS or any other cognitive disability is the habit of

overrelying on picture content. It is a horrible habit to break. Many teachers

tend to use this strategy initially to help the student feel successful with

beginning reading. It encourages the student and promotes a " buy in " to the

reading lessons. As the students begin to master skills, the teacher builds

lessons around the learned skills and the picture strategies are fazed out and

replaced with only mastered skill strategies to make the student successful. In

Elie's situation and many other students at his ability level, the teachers do

not place an effort on moving beyond, do not use a systematic approach,

incorporating the skills throughout the curriculum each day, practice and

presentation in different formats. If Elie knew his letter

sounds then getting him to actually look at enhanced letters(cvc words) other

than pictures was key at that point of mastery. It takes practice across every

spectrum to actually teach a student to look at each letter to decode words

beginning with simple cvc words, teaching beginning, middle and end sounds in

isolation, practice asking what sound do you hear at the end of the word, using

concrete examples. All this can be done in a skillful and enjoyable way using

all the tricks of the trade that a highly skilled teacher has in their repetoire

of strategies. Most times the focus of many school programs is functional,

placing little emphasis on reading or academics in general.Teaching a few site

words filled the intent. Don't mean to be a pain.

And I appreciate what you have to say. The problem with " cognitively impaired "

is that to the listener it implies an UNCHANGING status. My argument is that a

person who is retarded is SLLOOWW, not permanently anything. I want to convey

and repeat accordingly, " Altho Elie is not now able to...... this year he has

learned..... and thus is obviously, just sslloowwllyy reaching the goals that

are appropriate for him.

On the reading side, we have been thru the learning to read for children with

DS, read and sing (from Regency University!,) SRA reading (got to the first

grade primer three times with that one), Edmark sign reading and Edmark reading

program. We have not tried mood Bell (sp?) but are ready to try it. We use

the Wring 2000 program to write social stories and Elie can learn to read those,

but he is using the picture clues. If I remove the pictures he cannot read the

words. Elie can identify every fastfood business and most stores, identify from

a list food items in a grocery, identify all his videos (over 100), and his

audio tapes(a bucket full), but he cannot/will not? read a sentence without

picture clues. Thus I think that a sight program is probably better for his

visual leraning style then a phonics system. He can tell you the SOUND of every

letter, but doesn't identify the sound and the letter name with the picture of

the letter!

Nevere a pain Charlyne. I love learning from you. One of the ways I am writing

his contract for service, will entail hiring a teacher (or student) to work

directly on reading as part of his adaptation to working in the community. I am

hoping that I can " encourage " one of the university department heads in specil

ed to allow students to use my son (and others) as " projects " for class grades.

We have had VERY GOOD results with this in the past. Positive consequences

works for college students as well as Elie!!! We work on CVC words all the

time. HE does pretty well with that. But beyond " rhyming " words of cvc, he

will never attempt to sound out. I know he is using sight only to read.

Hi Sara,

I think using a college student may be a good idea but how about an education

student majoring in reading, maybe a grad student writing a dissertation. I

would take the pictures away from Elie and together pointing to each letter see

if he will try to decode, cat, fat etc.then change the last consonant cap, far

etc. I can't wait to hear what supports Elie will be getting. I learn from you

as well. Zeb is only 14. I walk in many of your paths.

Thanks . I am really paying for Elie's behavior yesterday. HE didn

't permanently damage me - he didn't hit hard enough but for a momentary

OUCH! But today, I can haardly move my upper body. Bothshoulders feel

wrecnhed and my neck is killing me. Believe me, working in the psych unit,

it was easier to take down a crazed 50 yo 250 lb vet than to move Elie the

Elephant!!!

I am HURTING!!! And tomorrow, I drive him to work one more time - 36

mountain miles! But so wowrth it. Elie really enjoys going to work. Hope

this lasts.

Hi Sara,

Yes he knows about triangles. He does ok.There is a down side to inclusion.

Zeb participated in family and comsumer science. He loved the cooking but he

also learned more about sex than I would have cared for him to know at 14. The

typical girls seem to feel more casual with Zeb, like showing off their new bra

while wearing it. If Zeb didn't have speech his school life would be much

different. Zeb gets frustrated too when the lessons aren't modified

appropriately. He is also dyslexic which makes reading for him so difficult. The

reading therapist said that it would serve no purpose to test him, because of

the DS, but she recommended using the same methodologies that are used for that

disability. He has all the symptoms, number and letter reversal etc. Using those

methods has helped when and if I can get the school to do it correctly. I think

all of us do great things with our kids. They all have their unique qualities. I

chose to spend my time on academics knowing that

Zeb is capable. I don't know if I did the right thing, time will tell. Elie has

matured into a man earning a paycheck. I think it's amazing. It is something to

be so proud of. I learn much from you and the others that have the older

children too.

The speech is a big part of inclusion and one of the many reasons we opted

out of inclusion for Elie after 3rd grade. Unlike Zeb, he was SSO

FRUSTRATED by all the goings on in a regular class.

Sara, you mean Zeb? He just turned 15. I don't think he would willingly go work

any time soon,LOL. I did start my business specifically with him in mind almost

14 yrs ago. He does help occasionally but only long enough to earn money to play

carnival games. Just can't get enough stuffed animals. We haven't done a school

transition plan as yet. I expect Zeb to choose a college program of some sort.

Time will tell.

Of course I meant Zeb - Charlyne I have this terrible disease - Names never

stick!

Along with a college program, maaybe Zeb would like a work skill. I only

wish we had started Elie on the IDEA that working for longer than an hour at

a time was a good thing. HE works GREAT for an hour or so. Can domany

different jobs as well, but after an hour or so, he

Sara, It is soooo wonderful to hear from you. I too always wondered what happened to that young, wonderful woman!!!! I can't believe it's been so long and now look at you! An old married woman and pregnant! I'm so happy for you! Yes, I too remember like Al when we got to meet you and other families here in Arlington, VA. That was so fun!! If you ever get to DC come visit! I'll look for you on facebook, but I'm not very active on there.

Anyone know someone that wants to rent my house for the week of inauguration? People are putting their homes on Craig's list and renting for $4-6K for the week! Unbelievable!
