Does anyone feel it is important or helpful to own the more recent books (cancer and HIV) if you are not treating them. I have a son with autism and spend a small fortune on him, so I never waste money not necessary for his well-being. Thanks in advance for your replies! Guest guest
She meant the " Prevention of All Cancers. " It was a simple mistake. " Prevention of All Cancers " is the latest book and it's excellent. Sometimes I find it dissappointing when people who have only read the first book give advice here because some of the important advice (which was written like mandates) from the first book has changed completely. If you crave more after reading " The Cure For All Diseases " and " Prevention of All Cancers, " move onto the remaining books because they too contain very helpful points/advice that do not strictly apply to cancer, e.g., new laundry assistance. Guest guest
Our son has had some similar shut down problems in school. He was motivated by letting him choose an activity after his work was done. Class periods are 45 minutes. Say he finishes his work in 30, he then has 15 minutes of free time. His choices are time with a favored adult, computer time, or going to the library. Tonya ( ) Books I’ve been looking for more books to help me learn more about AS. I have Tony Attwood’s books already. I’m going to be getting the OASIS book also. What other books would you recommend? Our major problems are arising at school. He doesn’t act out but he will refuse to do work in school. As it is now, he has had to sit out recess and free choice time because of his refusal to do anything. The school psychologist recommended rewards for work but it didn’t work. I’d like to learn about other ways to encourage him instead of punishing him. He doesn’t act out in anger. Instead he seems to shut down. Won’t talk/respond to anything. Makes it very difficult to know what’s going on. Also, he’ll be 7 in July. Should I tell him about his dx? Are there any good books geared towards kids to help with that? We have talked a lot about how everyone is different and how it’s nice to be different. ~
Guest guest
We had an SST (teacher, school psychologist) and a Behavior Support Plan was set up. Would a Functional Behavior Assessment be different? The behavior plan seemed very complicated to me. They gave him 3 tickets per day. Each ticket gave him 2 min of alone time. Every time he said he needed to use a ticket he’d get a star, coming back and doing the work, he’d get another star. By collecting stars he’d be able to earn rewards. It worked for maybe a week. Then he stopped using them. His teacher modified it so that he would get a star anytime he did any writing. His big reward was 5 min computer time. Well at one point he said he didn’t care anymore about the computer. It’s very difficult to get him motivated for anything. At least within the school environment. Things that work at home don’t work at school. Also if he doesn’t see the reason for something or the purpose behind it he won’t do it. He used to walk away from his table and either ‘collapse’ to the floor or go sit on a little couch they have in the classroom. He would either not talk to anyone, cry, or complain that he couldn’t keep up with his classmates. He hasn’t ‘collapsed’ in the past couple of months. However he will just sit there and not say anything. If he has to come up with his own sentences, he will not do the work. He just sits there and now is bothering the other kids at his table. I have asked if his work could be sent home and I’m being told yes- but they aren’t and he continues to be punished for not doing his work. I have an IEP tomorrow and I’m trying to come up with some ideas to discuss at the meeting. As for going to the library- the librarian there monitors the books he can take out so if he picks out a book and she doesn’t think it’s age appropriate she won’t let him. Then he gets upset and well down the spiral we go. It affects the rest of his day. I’ve talked to the teacher and she said she’d be sure he take out what he wants but that never happened. ~ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of ppanda65@... Guest guest
From: Atkins <adrlopez@...> Date: 2007/06/05 Tue AM 10:31:19 CDT Subject: RE: ( ) Books ...how old is your son? First of all, as a teacher I HATE it when people monitor what " kind " of books kids can take out. I think that is outrageous...reading is reading. My students (6th grade special ed) are all very low readers, they are NOT going to read a chapter book on their own-it's just not going to happen. So I ordered hundreds of picture/storybooks from 1st to 3rd grade tops. We have Accelerated Reader here (where they read a book and then take a little test on the computer to earn points then prizes)My students started reading these books (many of which they had never been exposed to because of their home lives) whenever they had spare time. Many low level books do contain some high vocabulary and I really feel that my students read more than they ever would have because it was quick for them and they could take the test right away. They love taking the tests. Some of my kids read over 50 books this year. I am lucky that my special ed director supported this project. Your son sounds so much like my daughter. I am so happy that her tantrums have declined significantly, but she still avoids work and behavioral systems DO NOT work for her. I think the only thing that will make a difference is a teacher that really grabs her and someone she will want to work for. She hates writing even though she can make up good stories. Much of it is the OT issues I think. Then yesterday when I get the note about putting her on Adderall I just lost it. I am just beside myself. That librarian should NOT be concerning herself with what books your son takes out especially if it is causing meltdowns...I would call the principal.
