A belated thanks to everyone who wrote about my search for a better

mattress. We finally decided on an Englander Laytex mattress, which just

arrived today. I had some last minute panicing last nite, after reading

about latex allergies (I think I MAY have an allergy, but not sure). My gut

instinct is telling me, that this bed will be fine (after my initial panic -

information overload from the internet!) It's certainly much firmer, yet

doesn't hurt my bod, plus, the chemical smell from the waterbed we used to

have is finally GONE (that couldn't have been good for either of us).

At any rate, it is so much more comfortable than what we had before, and we

got a beautiful, wooden bed also! (I'm like a little kid, so excited,

because this is the very first new piece of furniture I ever picked out,

that I really chose because I liked it!).

KsDi - My husband is quite a snorer as well. He has severe obstructive sleep

apnea - snoring can be a serious and life threatening matter - I would urge

you to get your husband to have a sleep study and make sure he doesn't have

apnea.

My 2 cents,

- by the way - if he does, a machine called a CPAP takes care of the

snoring and creates a soothing noise to sleep by.

I have to agree with the suggestion that snoring be investigated. I not only

have PA but I also have Sleep Apnea and the use of a CPAP machine has

enabled me to live again dispite the PA.

WE got one from Abundantearth.com but heart of vermont also carries

them. You need a doctor's prescription.

I have a heated mattress pad too and love it!! My little cousin who

I would be in trouble big time without mine. Mine heats very slowly and

probably not as one would expect. I turn it on full about an hour before bed

and leave it on all night. I guess because it works so slowly it is a very soft

heat and is very nice.

We bought a select comfort sleep number bed 10 years ago. I think it has

made the difference between so stiff he can't move or sleep good and rested

slumber for my husband who has RA.

Because he can make the bed as hard or as soft as he needs it to be for that

night! ( And so can I- dual contols allow each person that control)We added

a heating blanket and the winning combo made a big difference.

We have had 2 different elements of the system have a problem in the 1st 5

years and they either replaced for free or at a very reasonable rate.

In order to lower the cost- we got the mattress only and kept our old box

springs. The airbed by Select Comfort has made restful slumber in our house

possible.

(No I am not a paid rep- just a happy customer. Not only did we get one but

now both my parents and his have gotten the system also and are happy)

I too am just a happy customer. It was about 10 years with us also. Beds had

always been a problem and even buying as good quality as possible there would

still be " ruts " in it after a couple years. So we had been buying new ones.

The surface that I sleep on has always been top priority with me.

We bought one with a topper. Our beds had foundations, not box springs. We just

bought the mattress and use the old foundation. Generally speaking I think box

springs are more potentially troublesome than a foundation which is just a

board.

Then after a short while we bought another this time without the topper. We put

a memory foam topper on it.

We have electric mattress pads and those combinations are the best we have ever

had. The way I am now if sleeping on a regular bed is really bad. And we don't

have to constantly replace mattresses. We have had no problems at all with

them.

Before we chose the Select Comfort we bought another maker because it was

cheaper. When we saw it we knew right off that was a mistake. We returned it.

Pris we bought a pillowtop from a place here called The Original Mattress

stand to be w/ out it! Even better than a pillowtop because ya can adjust

I am glad this group allows various views on different subjects. I know

mattresses are a very personal issue. Each person sleep needs are different.

I had to write and respond- while a traditional mattress at 10 years may

Have " outlived its best life " -because the Select Comfort is a component bed

and not just 1 piece, we have been able to refresh the pieces at little cost

and it is almost as fresh today as it was 10 years ago. No sagging.

The fact that it uses air chambers, allowing adjustment, and not foam and

inter springs has kept it new feeling. We unzip and vacuum and turn the

parts every so often to keep it fresh and fight any allergens that might

exist.

There are 4 Select Comfort beds in the homes of my extended family and

myself. 5 of us have Arthritis of one form or another, 3 are over the age of

70, all have conditions affecting quality sleep. The air chamber, number

select bed has made a huge difference. Some of us have pillow top style-

others do not.

I do have any interest in the company- there are at least 2 different

companies selling the sleep number systems- I do not agree it has become

outdated " . I just felt folks ought to go check it out for themselves.

Hi Karolyn,

I am glad to hear from you on this - as my oldest brother, who is a chiropractor

recommends the SelectComfort beds - and tells me if I'd get one I'd sleep

better. He says it relieves the pressure points. I just cannot afford one

right now - but oh how I do want one!

I have decided if I get disabilty then I will ask my daughter to help me get one

- I know I can put a simple air mattress on top of my bed and sleep much better

than I do on the mattress alone - the only problem with that is there is little

protection in punctures since my dog likes to get on the bed with me :)

Anyway, thanks again for your input..

I think a mattress, and the comfort is gives you is TOTALLY a personal

thing. It is a preference, as opposed to what is right or wrong. I sleep on my

side, and it is REALLY important I get the right feel because I am skinny and

have

no " padding " of my bones. My big hubby sleeps on his back, and really can't

tell much about a mattresse's feel...

The top of the line extra firm Sealy we bought 8 years ago feels like

cement to me now. I gradually found through living in motels that my comfort

level

was going up, year after year in motels, and the firmness I used to love was

painful at home..

As I got RA, I no longer wanted " extra firm " .

In several hotels like the Marriot (our clients pay the bill) we have tried

the new expensive foam mattresses...not for me, they feel " dead " . The

Hilton had a pillow top by Beautyrest that I loved....it is coming tomorrow.

What bugged me the most in these expensive hotels was the more they cost, the

more puffy pillows on the bed! What do you do with 10 pillows, lol? EVERY

night I had to find a place to put these extra large sized monsters!

Also the HIGHER the bed, the more expensive the hotel. Like that helps

you.... I felt like I was mounting a horse going to bed, and falling off the

earth

to get up at night to visit the restroom, lol!

But a person should try out any new mattress for 15 minutes before buying, I

think.

I used to laugh at the pillow tops as being excessive, now I am counting the

hours until our new reasonably priced Beautyrest arrives..

I really think a mattress makes more difference (impact) if you sleep on

your side, after talking to doctors and mattress people. My hip bursitis

screams at extra firm, lol.

Betty and I bought a 2 " memory foam topper, king-size for our queen bed. We

cut it to fit and have some left over for pillows and things. It really

helped us and didn't cost much. I got it from eBay, " Mrs Foam " . It was less

than $100 and made it a new bed. It may be something to look into.

Before with even the best quality mattresses we could find after a couple years

they had ruts in them. So we were replacing mattresses every 2-3 years. We

have always used a foundation instead of a box spring. The foundation is

actually a board but that extends the life of the mattress.

We have 2 of the Select comfort beds that are over 10 years old and have no

problem. When we were shopping for them and said we only wanted the mattress we

were told that would void the warranty...until we told them we use a foundation.

For us those beds are a $$$$savings.

We had bought another brand and was sorely dissatisfied. The quality was not

good and the design was worse. So we went with their money back guarantee and

bought the ones we currently have.

Once, long ago, we found ourselves in an odd situation and we had no bed. We

got one of the airbeds advertised for camping and such. That bed was the best,

but then it got a hole in it and one morning we woke on the flood. Since then

we bought several and have never gotten another one that was that good. How

they are baffled makes all the difference.

We do have 2 of those camping beds that we use for spares or when we find

needing to bed someone down. Those 2 are comfortable but not like the ones we

have.

I have no money interest in this but just like the beds. When we bought they

had the lesser priced ones that did not have the remote number controls. I

don't know if they still do or not. We opted for the wired control for 2

reasons. 1 price and 2 we could not loose the remote. We fasten it to the head

of the bed in the manner most electric blankets are.

Speaking of electric blankets, we have electric mattress pads on our beds and

those help me as much as the bed. Without these I wake in the AM in awful pain

feeling like I have a spike in my hip joint.

I may have said this before, sorry if it is repeating. The bed

without the pillow top I put a memory foam on it also. I chose no

pillow top so that I would be able to change it when needed. But the

one with the pillow top is still in like new condition.

I recently found that there is a vast difference in memory foam. It

is reflected in the price for sure but I will not buy the cheap ones

again. I have a pillow that is very old. A chiropractor had ordered

it and the last several years I have tried to get another acceptable

one. I have bought several of the contoured pillows memory foam and

never found one I could be comfortable on. Then I ran across an

expensive pillow, a major brand that I forget now. After feeling it

I thought it might work. And it does. My old pillow was contoured

and it braced my neck. The new one, a flat one, does the job well.

When I put my head on the pillow I push firmly for it to sink in and

the neck part still bracing my neck. I have concluded that pillows

are like shoes, they have to fit. Lying down on my back or side,

without a neck brace for even a couple minutes really creates a

problem for me. Beds need to fit also.

HI,

I am new here and just saw this message and tought I would comment.

A little over a year ago I looked at lots and lots of the memory foam

bed toppers. I got one that was what they call the 6# foam weight in 4

inches thick. It was right about $200 from ebay. It also came with 2

of the foam pillows. I don't care for the pillows much though.

I think the bed topper is really nice. We have dogs and they do not

damage it. It has a waterproof topper we put on it that we got from

walmart for $40 or so.

In the future, if I every had to replace it, I am not sure why though

because it never has seemed to change at all over the last year + we

have had it. But anyway, I think I would get a 3 inch thick one, as I

think I sink into the 4 inch one a little more than I would like.

I also think that getting the heavier foam weight is better. the 6# is

the heaviest avaialbe of the common weights, but I read about 8# ones

comming out, I might suggest you think about one of thoses, perhaps in

a 3 inch thick version...

Just thought I would share my experiance on this topic...

Hello

I never tried those mattresses but I did by a memory foam bed topper

from Boscov's Dept Store (you can get them on line and a lot of times

they have free shipping and they are a lot cheaper here than a lot of

other stores)it made a very big difference in my sleep I was having a

lot of hip pain and could not get comfortable and would wake up in

pain. I find since I started using the topper I sleep deeper and I

fall asleep faster. It truly has made a difference and it was a lot

cheaper than a new bed. Good luck and take care.

We have put a good foam covered with down and the top is baffled on the

top of our existing mattress. Best thing we have done. We are hoping to

save for a Tempur-Pedic some day. Our timeshare in Myrtle Beach has them

and we love it.
