Guest guest
I bought a vial of 100 strips at our local drug store for under $8. They aren't the best - you need to compare " color " which is not very exacting - but I go by taste mostly and if the strip responds in the general area I consider that agreeing with me. Guest guest
I looked for the testing strips at our drug store (Riteaid) and they didn't have them. Since I am new to KT, I'd like to test mine. Guest guest
Hello, Well, if you shop online they make pH testers if you search for them, you'll find the electronic sort, most will do to a 0.2 pH reading. Guest guest
Hi Bob, Taste, - the more sour the taste the more acidic the brew. I've been making KT since 1994 and never needed pH strips. Unless of course, you are doing an experiment or some other procedure. Guest guest
Hi Bob - There are electronic testers out there. I looked into them and they are more accurate but are not as easy as you would hope. The cheapest start around $100 and the tips of the testers need to be cared for diligently and/or calibrated and/or replaced regularly. I've also read reviews that the $100 (cheap) ones usually don't last more than a year. The strips work just fine for me. I use the " ph Hydrion microfine 2.9-5.6 " ones (I think that is the range, or something close to it, I know it starts at 2.9 (bright orange color) and goes up from there, to 5.x (dark green color). I find the colors pretty easy to tell and inbetween colors would be inbetween numbers. I think I paid $15+shipping for two boxes Dec '11. I just opened my 2nd box in May, but I do a lot of testing for all my different fermented beverages. > ** > > > > > Does any one know of a way to test the pH instead of using the pH test > strips. > I used the strips in the past but was looking for alternatives. > > Also if there is no other way does anyone have a good seller of the strips > or can they be gotten at a drug store > > Bob > > >
Guest guest
Thanks. I know a lot of people and myself just drink by trial and error what tastes good. However I believe a certain pH is supposedly the optimal for the KT. I can not find my notes do you remember what the optimal pH is? I myself have used the strips in the past as the seller of the cultures promote them for KT quality and profit. I am sure the KT retailers who manufacture KT test theirs for consistency. That said I just want to test an occasional batch to make sure I am on target. Because what I like and what is good for me may be 2 different things pH's. Where did you buy them?
