HI Mike

I was

wondering where you live and how are your sons doing?

Thanks

Hi Cecilia,

I agree with

everything that Caroline said and want to also add this. When you speak

to the anesthesiologist before the surgery, and you will have an opportunity to

do this, make him/her aware of your son's neck status. Unless there are

serious issues with the neck, he should tell you that he always assumes there

are the potential for neck issues in kids with DS. If he doesn't say

something like that, I would be concerned. We have been through 2 or 3

different gas-passers and they have always said this to us.

If you are

more concerned, or if there are neck issues to for him to be aware of, contact

your surgeon and find out who the anesthesiologist is going to be and then

contact him directly to prepare him for the situation.

Recommendations

HI Cecilia

Did the x-ray show any

instability in your son neck? My sons had xrays when they were 3 or five and

then again at 10 years of age. The first x-ray was negative but the second one

showed a small spacing in both my sons’ necks. We did not have to do anything

but we are aware of the neck issue and I always tell who ever is with my sons

for anything about the neck issue. If you are worried about the surgery just

tell the doctors to be aware of the neck issue and your son may have it. They

will take precautions for it. I hope you son is not going in for anything

serious.

Recommendations

Does anyone

know the current recommendations for atlantoaxial instability x-rays for kids

with DS? My son is 7 and had an AAI x-ray when he was 5. He is

going to have surgery and I want to make sure that I am up to speed on

everything AAI.

We live in the Dallas area and my kids are doing great. Medically, they are in excellent health. Developmentally, we still struggle with bathroom issues and are largely non-verbal. We read and write and do math, but it's all very quiet. The surgeries I mentioned earlier were mostly all for minor things, teeth pulling, ear tubes and the like.

Thank you for asking Caroline.
