Guest guest
Borax is readily availiable from pharmacies in Oz. ce From: Deb Dr Sent: Sunday, February 05, 2006 3:30 PM Subject: Borax You may remember that I mentioned the difficulty in obtaining things in Australia? Well, one such thing is, believe it or not, Borax. I did find " Harper's Powdered Borax " but the price/size (about $6/lb.) leads me to believe that it may be a different concentration than the 20-mule team stuff. It says powdered but it looks a bit shiny/crystally. The label reads: ASSAY: 99% MIN. BORAX. " Can anyone clarify this? (It says it's an imported product, packed in Australia). Thanks in advance. Oh, and thanks for your personal insight on the cookware debate. I'm tossing up whether or not to get stainless steel. Budget is always an issue but rates second against health. Guest guest
Thank you, ce, for taking the time to reply. I think you may have misunderstood me. As I previously stated, I did find " Borax " , in the grocery store nonetheless, but due to size/price variance I am wondering if it is somehow different to " 20 mule team " Borax. While things ARE more expensive here, I can't believe there would be that much discrepancy in price. I thought perhaps it may be a stronger concentration. That being the case, I would have to adjust Dr. 's recipes accordingly. That's basically all I was trying to work out. > > Borax is readily availiable from pharmacies in Oz. > ce > From: Deb > Dr > Sent: Sunday, February 05, 2006 3:30 PM > Subject: Borax > > > You may remember that I mentioned the difficulty in obtaining things > in Australia? Guest guest
Your local small-island grocer may have stopped stocking Borax, but I think it is still produced and sold all over the world. If you go to www.google.com and search for Borax, as I just did to test this, you will find many sources who will ship it to you if you have a credit card or PayPal account to pay for it. Have fun! - Doc Meek P.S. As you know, Borax is heavy and the shipping costs may be a little high, depending on how you ask for it to be shipped. > > > I have been using Borax ever since I have read Dr. > 's books and I really liked it. Guest guest
Ingrid, Lucky for us that borax is mined here in California and has not run out. Rio Tinto corp. claims on their website, borax.com, to produce half of the world's supply. They have a link to dialcorp.com which is the U.S. packager of 20 Mule Team Borax, the only retail version I have ever seen here. Dialcorp.com has a store locator feature. Your grocer probably meant that his supplier was discontinuing carrying borax. You might talk to him/her about a special order if you are willing to buy in bulk. store.com carries the 4lb. 12oz. box for $9.75 and you would have to pay some more for shipping. Lastly, a friend or relative on your mainland might look for a store near them and send it to you. The real problem with all of these is the shipping cost. Guest guest
Thank you for your message, but we have no Wal Mart... Our grocery store had it until most recently, but discontinued it... So, I have to fly to another island to get it... very difficult for me... Does anyone know of a good substitute... a soap without perfumes and without Sodium Laurel Sulfate? I'd appreciate any suggestion. Guest guest
Hi Tammy, I wash my clothes, my hair, the dishes, the counter tops, the floors, the screens and whatever needs cleaning, with Borax. It may not be quite as strong as other detergents, but--just as Dr. says-- it works without the suds. I understand that most soaps contain Sodium Laurel Sulfate, which is carcinogenic. Besides, I cannot handle the smell of other detergents. Borax leaves no smell. The only thing I had to get used to, was that there are no suds... Guest guest
Boric acid is an acid, while Borax is the natural mineral salt mined in Death Valley, with the formula sodium tetraborate decahydrate. Quite different, I believe. Here is the MSDS info from www.Borax.com Looks pretty safe to me. We have used it safely for years, and I feel it helped me get rid of cancer by being a safe cleaning alternative. We now use liquid castile soap from www.vermontsoap.com. Very pure and hypoallergenic, as well as very cheap at only $99 US for 5 gallons of concentrate which we dilute 2 or 3 to one. " Emergency overview Borax is a white, odorless, powder substance that is not flammable, combustible, or explosive and has low acute oral and dermal toxicity. Potential ecological effects Large amounts of Borax can be harmful to plants and other species. Therefore, releases to the environment should be minimized. Potential health effects Routes of exposure: Inhalation is the most significant route of exposure in occupational and other settings. Dermal exposure is not usually a concern because Borax is poorly absorbed through intact skin. Inhalation: Occasional mild irritation effects to the nose and throat may occur from inhalation of Borax dust at levels greater than 10 mg/m3. Eye contact: Borax is non-irritating to the eyes in normal industrial use. Skin contact: Borax does not cause irritation to intact skin. Ingestion: Products containing Borax are not intended for ingestion. Borax has a low acute toxicity. Small amounts (e.g., a teaspoon) swallowed accidentally are not likely to cause effects; swallowing amounts larger than that may cause gastrointestinal symptoms. Cancer: Borax is not a known carcinogen. Reproductive/developmental: Animal ingestion studies in several species, at high doses, indicate that borates cause reproductive and developmental effects. A human study of occupational exposure to borate dust showed no adverse effect on reproduction. Target organs: No target organ has been identified in humans. High dose, animal ingestion studies indicate the testes are the target organs in male animals. Signs and symptoms of exposure: Symptoms of accidental over-exposure to Borax might include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, with delayed effects of skin redness and peeling. These symptoms have been associated with the accidental overexposure to the chemically related substance boric acid. " Blessings! Guest guest
Borax was mentioned & I'd like to add that borax will fill up a septic in no time - it doesn't dissolve. I put about an inch of it in a bottle, fill with water, shake & leave it to settle for days/weeks. I never let the sediment (which has sometimes turned into a rock) go down the drain. I used that as body soap years before MCS & got rid of my dry skin - on the advice of Dr Hulda - a stickler for avoiding chemicals.
Guest guest
> > > Oops-now I am nervous-my allergy doctor told me to use a tub full of water and add 1/2 cup of clorox to bathe in and also to wash my clothes in the 20 mule team stuff----is this wrong? courtney > @@ Hi , For laundry just add borax,(and white vinegar to rinse water), and anything washable. For bleach you can use hydogen peroxide. For bathing you can add a cup or 1/2 a cup of baking soda ( Arm & Hammer - brand) or Epsom salts to a bath tub of non-chlorinated water. You can even mix half a cup of each, your choice. However, I would not advise you bathe in borax/clorox. That is ill advice from your allergt doc in my humble opinion. More so, if you only have chlorinated bath water at your disposal. Best in Health, Ed group moderator
