: I swear by Melatonin and Tori gets 3 mg when needed. She weighs 53

lbs. now, but has been getting the same dosage for quite a while. I am not sure

about the expiration date, it just may not be as effective.

Logan weighs about 73 lbs and gets 4.5 mg at night (we use a spray). We

have used this dosage for a long time. For a while he was on 6 mg.

LOVE melatonin.  We all use it at our home.  And our pediatrician approved it.

Hi, I feel like this topic has been discussed before, but I wanted to get some feedback on melatonin.  Is anyone using it for their children, with or without Down syndrome?  I have heard/read that it is safe and effective.  Three of my four children, including my son with Ds, are having terrible sleep issues.  This has been on and off for years for my 8-year-old, who also has ADHD/Inattentive type, and also for both of my 4-year-old twins.  It’s getting unbearable for all of us, as no one ever has a good night’s sleep.  I’m going to talk to my doctor about it but am looking to try it right away and am hoping others on this site have successfully used it for their kids?

 Thank you!EileenMom to Owen (10), Maeve (8), Colin (4/Ds), and (4)

We use it as well! Our typical 5 y/o has sleep issues and the melatonin helps her to go to sleep at a reasonable hour while we work on the surrounding issues - rather than try to work on the issues while she (and thus the rest of us!) is overtired and cranky. We also used it for Teddy, our 2 y/o twin w/DS, temporarily when he was teething, otherwise he would just fuss and cry for hours despite rocking, Tylenol, etc. Just a note, it is safe and effective but only helps with FALLING asleep, not staying asleep. We get the NOW brand (which I trust) on Amazon Subscribe and Save and it is quite reasonable. The capsules are flavorless white powder that can be easily divided and mixed with milk or applesauce or whatever. Best of luck!Heidi PorterSent from my iPhone

We use it for both boys for those times needed (time changes, traveling, hard to wind down nights, etc.)  Doc recommended for our son with Ds (sleep apnea) to help break his needing someone to put him to sleep awhile back.  Melantonin will help put you to sleep, but unless you use " time release " version, it won't KEEP you asleep.  I tried it on my other son and it worked wonders...out within 15 minutes.  However, it's not as effective for our son with Ds and not sure why...I need to use more mgs for him.  We started out with 1 mg.....GNC has a 1 mg sublingual cherry flavor that they take easy.  Just last night my son (non-ds) was having a coughing fit and hard time sleeping, so I gave him 3mgs in the middle of night....helped him get back to sleep.  It's very safe as it's something we already produce in our bodies (much better then the days of parents giving benedryl to make kids sleep)  With it being so light out now at bed time, it's helpful to have something to push the body into sleep mode! :)  I've heard though that if you use it all the time, it ends up not being as effective as if just using it here & there.

Give it a try...maybe 1mg at a time.Good Luck & hope everyone gets some sleep!Sherry,Mom to Ray & Sam(Ds), 6

Eileen, was such a terrible sleeper. She had trouble self-soothing to go to sleep and she had trouble staying asleep. We actually put in on a very light dose sleeping pill. Then we had to change her medications and she could not take it anymore. Her Endocrinologist suggested we try Melatonin. We really like it. It does seem to help her go to sleep and stay asleep though the night.I would not start it without talking to my doctor, because you do need a dose recommendation. Also our doctor said not to use it every night or it might not be as affective. So we don't give it to her every day.I have even started taking it because I don't sleep well, and it has worked for me as well.

Luke always had a very difficult time getting to sleep, so we use the sublingual

melatonin from the vitamin store (it's liquid cherry flavor) about 1/2 hour

before bedtime. He also is on Clonidine (.8 mg) which helps him stay

asleep--that is a RX from the doc & I give it at the same as the melatonin. It

made such a huge difference when we got him on both. Now, except for the rare

times when he wakes VERY EARLY and stays up, we all get a good nights' sleep. I

would highly recommend both melatonin and clonidine.

Good luck,

We use melatonin for the same reasons: it's natural and safe. In our case, medicine does not work immediately -- it takes about 30 minutes. I don't know of any down side of melatonin. But I agree that it should not be a regular thing; with all long-term drugs our bodies eventually adjust & sometimes in ways that are not good.

Thank you, everyone!  We have now tried it two nights for our three children having issues.  It does seem to help get them to sleep but, as everyone said, it certainly does not help them stay asleep and that is where we are also struggling.  A friend said it helps her two kids that take it to sleep better all night long but for us, so far, that has not been the case.  We’ll keep using it as needed at bedtime and try to find another solution for the middle of the night waking!  Unfortunately (or fortunately, I suppose), our 4-year-old twins (including our son with Ds)  wake to go to the bathroom during the night.  They may or may not go back to sleep easily, and they may or may not wake each other in the process, and they always need our help to go (Colin) or be tucked back in ().  Add in two older kids who are each up once or twice and our house, as my husband says, is like a bus station all night long…. Thank you again for the feedback.  I appreciate knowing how many people use it/have used it successfully. Eileen,There are different options of melatonin on the market. If your children are having trouble staying asleep after the initial dose, there are time released/prolonged release options you can get that will help them stay asleep. I got a recommendation from the pharmacist at a medical pharmacy. You could also ask your doctor if they have one to recommend or your child.Good luck getting them and you some rest.___________________Thank you, everyone!
