Guest guest
Hi ,We made SEVERAL trips to the pediatric dentist. Make sure you find one that is good with kids with DS. They really need to understand the structure of the mouths of kids with DS. Davey used to grind his teeth. He probably still does but now it is not wearing on his teeth so bad. Both times he had dental surgery, we were in the surgery center. Our ped dentist believed in not frightening the kids. She also did not try to do too much exam while he was awake. Davey had several crowns and quite a few teeth pulled. I feel it really helped him in the long run. He could not grind down the crowns. We also got the space in his mouth for his adult teeth to come in properly. She also filled several teeth that had decay. We even tried a mouth guard for a little while to help with the grinding. Now when Davey goes to the dentist, he is not frightened, rarely has a cavity and actually brushes his teeth quite well. Find a good ped dentist. Maybe you can observe how they treat the kids before you take your son in for an exam. There are dentists out there that will help you. Good luck!Love life and be gentle, Hello Everyone, It's been a while since I've posted. We're busy as usual. My son is 6 years old and has already lost 3 baby teeth. Two of his top front teeth had been ground down to little "nubs". In just the past month or so, both of those teeth fell out and new ones are coming in. Last week a bottom tooth fell out also. His twin brother has not lost a tooth yet. Is this normal? Obviously I am going to have to take him to a pediatric dentist. I tried a regular dentist and he would not even open his mouth for him. We always joke that he is going to need dentures with all of this grinding, but it really is no longer a joke. I'm interested to see if others have gone through this. Guest guest
My boys are 6 as well....Sam's(Ds) top teeth are also ground down to nubs, but he hasn't lost any teeth yet....wish those would go! He's looked like he doesn't have 2 front teeth for over a year now! My other son, Ray (non-Ds), JUST lost his first tooth last week of which was loose for quite awhile. He has another loose too and he's an awful grinder! I've heard that kids lose their teeth at different ages and that our kiddos with DS usually are delayed in losing....so, I think your boys are fine. YES! a very patient pediatric dentist with experience has been the best for our Sam! It's worth the extra miles to travel to if need be. I've also heard that most kids grind and that once the new teeth start coming in especially those molars, they tend to stop....hoping that's the case for both of my boys! Good Luck with it all!Sherry,Mom to Ray & Sam(Ds), 6 Hello Everyone, It's been a while since I've posted. We're busy as usual. My son is 6 years old and has already lost 3 baby teeth. Appts and such. She grinds her teeth, has an expander for years and partial braces on the bottom front. is 13 and is still losing teeth! Has a loose one now that I sure wish would come out! ) It is very common for Kids with DS to lose teeth at an older age. Guest guest
, Luke used to grind his teeth but once his permanent teeth started coming in he stopped grinding. He goes to a pediatric dentist because it is quite a challenge to get him to cooperate in the dentist's chair, and I really like where we go. They are very good with him and listen to me as well. I would highly recommend a ped dentist with experience with kids with DS. Also, my boys have lost teeth nearly at the same time. I have completely lost count but I think Jake has lost a few more, but not by many. --mom to Luke (DS) and Jake, age
