Guest guest
My twins are 5 and they just had their physicals. Molly is 5 inches shorter than her typical twin. I do see some "average" height DS kids but it does seem to ring true that they are indeed smaller in stature. Guest guest
Thanks everyone! I figured it to be more common than not, but I always wonder when I see a " tall " kid with DS....I know the geneticist said height also depends on family genes and we are all fairly average. I read somewhere that listening to Mozart produces the growth hormone???? who knows but other benefits to listening as well, so might be worth trying. Have a great weekend everyone!Sherry My twins are 5 and they just had their physicals. Molly is 5 inches shorter than her typical twin. Guest guest
My boys, and -- 6 1/2 year old IDs with Ds -- are 48" tall. The average 7-year-old is 44" on the typical developmental chart. That puts them in the 75th percentile. Guest guest
I was 5'8" on a good day. Most of the women in my family are between 5'6" and 5'8. The men on my side of the family don't quite reach 6'. My hubby, on the other hand, didn't hit 5'8" (though I give it to him) and he's the tallest in his family. His mother never hit 5'. I've always thought, with my boys, that it has a lot to do with the total lack of medical issues and they've NEVER had any eating issues... which definitely helps. My daughter is very tall also. She's 10 and, at 58" is 7" taller than the "average" 10-year-old girl. I suspect all 3 of my children will be a bit on the tall side, regardless of the number of chromosomes. Guest guest
I know that (ds) use to be pretty tall for his age (as per the growth charts) however I haven't looked in several years now and would imagine that is no longer the case. He just turned 15 last month and is 5'11/2" and (his 13 year old sister) is 5'61/2". Nicala ('s twin sister) is between and 's height. I am 5'5" (news to me as I always thought I was 5'6"). Guest guest
I think some of you know that there are different height and weight growth charts for children with DS. At the very least, pediatricians ought to know. But the data are out of date. Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is at work on updating the numbers. Will and were measured there last summer. They are also participating in a longitudinal brain-development study at NIH in Bethesda, MD. I don't know if either project is taking on new subjects, but you might check on the Internet. You would have to pay for your own travel to either site; you do get a small stipend, enough to buy a pair of socks. Al Veerhoff, Kensington, MD, parent of 21-year-old identical twins with DS height I think the height differential is very common. For our triplets, is definitely a whole head shorter if not more now. Guest guest
Al - you always have a response that brings a smile to my face. God bless him... better him than me, watching opera. My Dad was into it but it's never been my gig. We've never been on the DS chart. The average size of a full-term twin -- w/o Down syndrome -- is 5lbs at birth. We were right there despite being 8 weeks early! The boys were born at 4lbs 15oz and 4lbs 11oz. And, they've been keeping pace since. All I can say is... I'm a bit thankful they missed those last 2 growth months of pregnancy b/c I don't think my body could have survived it. I was already on bed rest with torn rib muscles and a sprained back, neck and shoulders. More pain than I'd ever felt in my life (even more than delivering my older daughter completely drug free!!!!). I know my boys are not EXPECTED to be very tall... but we've all seen those tall kids and wondered if ours might be one of those. We won't know until they grow! Maybe they will be tall, maybe they won't. It's all ok with me.
