That sounds great, and good call, IMO, about skipping the cruise. :-)

We are homeschooling, so the summer is similar to the rest of the year with more

outings. To maintain familiarity, we have a season pass to a local

amusement/water park. It's close to an hour's drive (which is about DS' limit

for car time), but once there he is very comfortable with the rides and

environment. So that makes it easier for everyone to relax and a good

confidence builder for Ds.

Just want to throw this out (for other readers), I have four ranging from ages 2

to11 and have always had a Medic Alert bracelet for our oldest due to severe

allergies. I go ahead and have each child wear a bracelet now for ID purposes

should they get separated from me. But, if you don't want to do a bracelet

every day, it's not a bad idea to get a jewelry item or shoe tag that has your

cell phone number and other important information on it when going out to the

parks. Our amusement park actually offers disposable bracelets that parents can

write their cell numbers on and have the child wear while at the park- clever.

On Etsy, there are a lot of sellers who make the beaded ID style bracelets, but

use numbers rather than names. They're great for going out in busy places-

amusement parks, the beach, zoos, etc. :)

Gillian mostly does all right in the car. The absolute max I've had her for a

road trip is 5 hours, but we stop several times along the way.

This will be the 3rd time we've taken this particular trip up north. We usually

stop about 90 minutes in for breakfast at a bakery we love. Then, I stop again

about 75 minutes later for gas (I always get gas before we leave, but gas up

north is a LOT more expensive, so I try to stop as late as possible to fill up

again, so we usually don't need to get gas until we're headed home). Then we

stop at a specific rest stop about an hour later- it has a hike up a hill, with

a scenic over look over the woods. The hike is nice for getting the kids legs

stretched out. You can drive up to the top, but we always walk it.

Then 10 minutes up the highway is a seashell store that we stop at, even though

it's so close to the overlook. I may skip the overlook this time, and just head

straight to the seashell shop.

I think the 4 hour trip with the Girl Scouts will be MUCH harder. She'll be in a

van with 4 other 10 yo's. They all understand Gillian, and know her little

quirks. That said, they're also 10 years old, and don't always have the patience

for her quirks.

We are stopping once about 90 minutes away, then we're in it for the long haul

for the rest of the trip. We'll be doing some games to get the girls running

around, and we'll have a snack while we're there.
