Kroger announced Saturday it is recalling select varieties of dog and cat

food sold in some of its retail stores - including those in Mississippi -

because the products may contain a substance that poses serious health risks to

pets.

The items included in the recall may be contaminated with

aflatoxin, a toxic chemical byproduct that occurs naturally from the growth of

fungus on corn and other crops.

The following varieties of pet food are included:

Aflatoxin can cause pets to exhibit signs of illness including sluggishness

or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, a yellowish tint to the eyes or

gums, and severe or bloody diarrhea. Pet owners whose animals experience any of

these symptoms are advised to contact a veterinarian immediately.

Kroger said its customers who have purchased a recalled item should not use

it and instead return it to a store for a refund or replacement.
