Guest guest
Corky-forget about testing-you will waste your money finding out what you know already-the towels are no good. I find that some fabrics hold on to odors forever and some don't. Throw them out. I don't know where you are but here in NY they spray for mosquitoes in the summer and they spray often. The first time I got sick I was hysterical because I couldn't figure it out then I put two and two together and realized I get sick from the spraying outdoors! It's SO hard to know what makes us sick-right now my bedroom is practically empty and still something is wrong-it wasn't wrong 2 days ago but now it is. It's an awful life sometimes. Listen to what you instincts tell you-sometimes with the brain fog we don;t trust our brains to tell us the truth but you always know when something is bad. Good luck, Surella! > > Back in Oct 2010 I bought 4 plastic bags of towels from the thrift shop-- to use as rags. I spread them out on my spare room carpet to sort-- there was a bad odor (? musty) coming from them & I got ill immediately. I washed one load in my washer & dryer, did the others in the laundry room where I live. I used my detergent and non-chlorine bleach in one load, and detergent & baking soda in the other. Got same reaction to the rags even after washing. I returned 3 bags to the store (could not find receipt for the other one, so it's in my shed). > <snip>
Guest guest
I bought some plastic tubs w lids to store clothes in. Ugh, the odor! Washing the clothes works for some clothes and not for others, so fabric type does make a difference. It seems the tubs are getting to the point that they aren't off gassing anymore but some clothing may never get rid of odor and probably will have to be thrown out or given away to people who aren't bothered by the odor. Some people don't notice it or if they do, don't think it is bad. > > Corky-forget about testing-you will waste your money finding out what you know already-the towels are no good. Guest guest
From your post I would think it is the outside air. I am having similar problems. After outside air makes me ill, inside is not good either, so I think it is just a reaction to the air seeping in and should clear out soon. It does not sound like your washer or clothes. I cannot do thrift stores or good will or any of that.    God Bless !! dragonflymcs Mayleen ________________________________ From: corkylux1 <corkylux1@...> Sent: Sun, December 26, 2010 3:50:17 PM Subject: [] those thrift shop towels again  Back in Oct 2010 I bought 4 plastic bags of towels from the thrift shop-- to use as rags. Guest guest
Since whatever this is disappeared from my spare room (carpet, as I had sorted the towels there) in 3 mos, I figured there must be something I can do. I put baking soda on the carpet, not sure if that made the difference. Think I will run baking soda w/ hot water thru my washer. What's odd is that I washed most of the thrift shop towels at the laundry here, used that machine ( & the others) repeatedly over the last 3 mos, nothing bothered me from doing my clothes, linens there. So I figure with a lot of residents using the machines & with bleach, there must be a way to make my washer safe again. Worth a try.  I have that Shark steam cleaner (small), does not throw much steam so I don't use. Thought I would use the thing they include to unclog the nozzle-- might have been clogged when I got it. Then I could try steaming my mattress, sheets and my towels (not the thrift shop towels). Then take them to the laundry here and wash.  If nothing I do works, I might call a professional green cleaner to steam my mattress & box springs.  I'm in Phoenix, they don't spray here for mosquitos often. But-- people here have an exterminator come once a month to spray inside and outside. It might be pesticides or cleaners that got to the towels at the thrift shop receiving center. So many people will say the spray (inside) won't hurt you, it's odorless. When I look at rentals I get a reaction almot immediately and of course, they think I am nuts. One owner & I were standing in the center of the living room when he squirted what he had in the can. I got ill, difficulty breathing. I asked him if that was insect spray-- he said yes. I yelled at him that he better cut that out, that he could kill someone, then I explained MCS to him.  Wish I had known of this illness when I was young-- I would have gone out of my way to avoid chemicals. Back east we rarely used pesticides, stayed at one residence for many years. I put baking soda on the kitchen cupboards before putting down shelf paper-- to take care of any roaches that might come around. I used a mouse trap w/ cheese & peanut butter. We used fly swatters. I went to Tucson at age 35, they sprayed my apts every month. I started getting weak spells, thought it was my eating habits but now I believe I was in the early stages of MCS as it got worse in my 40s but drs could not figure out what was wrong with me.  Hope you figure out real soon what is making you sick! Seems we spent most of our time figuring out what is making us ill and trying to figure out what to do about it.  ....Corky  It's SO hard to know what makes us sick.............. Guest guest
Barb I picked up one of those tubs and when I put it in my shopping cart the first thing I noticed was the chemical smell coming from it. When I got it home I lined it with a trash can liner. > > I bought some plastic tubs w lids to store clothes in. Ugh, the odor!
