Guest guest
Not a mattress, but a futon...Soaring Heart Futon in Seattle makes them but require a prescription for the chemical-free ones. My acupuncturist/NAET practitioner wrote the prescription for me. Guest guest
We have one Lifekind mattress and one from A Natural Home in Fredericktown, OH, which was about half the price of Lifekind. The Lifekind is an organic cotton/natural latex mattress with a wool layer, which is naturally fire retardant and meets fire safety requirements, so there was no need for a prescription. A Natural Home makes a similar mattress without the wool layer, so you do need a prescription. This wasn't a big deal--my daughter's ped wrote one, but if you don't have luck with your primary care you could try your dentist. I like both mattresses very much, but if I needed another I'd go with A Natural Home because it's cheaper and I like that the cover is removable and cleanable (Lifekind covers are sewn on). It's funny, when we ordered our mattress a few months ago from A Nat Home they said the cover was washable, now the website only says eco dry cleanable, but I washed ours and it's fine. Also you can make your own wool mattress pad by washing and drying (in the dryer) a wool blanket. This felts the wool and makes it more of a water resistant surface, and it's essentially how the expensive wool mattress pads are made. The website for A Natural Home is a bit confusing--do call Suzie, the owner, if you're interested. I found it really helpful to talk to her because they can customize your order and she can talk you through the options. We ordered the 6-inch mattress and really love it. I thought we might want to upgrade to the 9-inch at some point, and Suzie said we could send back the mattress cover and for $50 they'd remove the 6-inch side and sew in a 9-inch side so that we could add the additional 3-inch layer of latex (which would be an additional charge too). But I'm so happy with the 6-inch I don't think we need another layer. With a latex mattress you do need a futon frame or platform with slats so the mattress can breathe. You can try it on the floor for a month or so, but it really should have airflow after that. A futon frame would work if the slats are the right distance apart. We bought the platform bed from A Natural Home--it's Amish-built, finished in tung oil (or it can be shipped unfinished) and beautiful with simple lines. The tung oil did have a mild smell for a few weeks but I don't smell it anymore. And just for the record, I have no interest in A Natural Home other than being a happy customer, glad to support a local Ohio business, and appreciative that they offer organic mattresses much cheaper than anyplace else I've seen.
