They aren't educated as to the make-up of breastmilk, nor are they ever told what exactly is in it that would cause decay. IMO, the only thing I can find that explains this attitude is that bm is sweet, ergo it MUST be sweetened, sweetened=sugar, and sugar causes plaque, which in turn becomes decay, as the plaque and sugar feed the bacteria that causes decay. Here is more detail on what I found, the page is over a year old I just haven't had time to update it. Guest guest
Hi, I'm a bit of a lurker, but thought I ought to respond to this. I have had problems with my 2yo dd's teeth also. Her 4 front teeth all had decay and when she was about 18months I took her to the best ped dentist that I could find. He simply drilled away a tiny bit of the rotten teeth and filled them with a temporary filling...only 2 of the 4 teeth actually needed the filling and the whole thing took about 2 minutes. Now her back top molars also have cavities, so we will have to go back again... Basically, I'm pretty sure that the breastfeeding is contributing to the decay (not the entire cause, mind you, since 4yo dd had the same sort of breastfeeding pattern and has beautiful teeth - and is still breastfeeding occasionally) I personally think that I might have had a lack of calcium and other minerals while I was pregnant, combined with not vigilantly brushing her teeth when they first appeared. Anyway, needless to say, we do brush teeth regularly and if the temp fillings come loose they can easily be replaced (hasn't happened yet). Also, I have heard that you can get the teeth coated to protect them, but I don't know if this can leach chemicals. Funnily enough, dd's bottom teeth are all fine! Perhaps you can get a second opinion? hth -christina __________________________________________________
Guest guest
I've heard recently that antibiotics used during pregnancy and possibly when the child is a baby can contribute to tooth problems, not sure if that's referring to rotting teeth or discoloration or what... is that a possibility? My son was partially vaccinated (everything thru 12mo), completely bottle-fed including bottles at night, got teeth at 4 1/2 months.... and his teeth aren't bad. I think I might have had an antibiotic towards the end since I was told I had a yeast and bladder infection (had no symptoms of either so I'm wondering if maybe they got my test results mixed up with someone else? Or did they just catch both really early??) -Merry > Hi, > I'm a bit of a lurker, but thought I ought to respond > to this. I have had problems with my 2yo dd's teeth > also. Guest guest
<< Basically, I'm pretty sure that the breastfeeding is contributing to the decay >> >>Ouch. That hurt. I've researched this for over two >>years. Can I have your source? I meant that in *my* dd's case, *I* think that the continuous-through-the-night breast-feeding was *one* *contributing* factor to the decay. I had a look at your site and read your next posting on the subject and found it very informative. I had a look at the Families for Natural Living site where I found this: " The study, by the University of Nijmegen, Netherlands, in 1992, concluded that once a child is infected with ECC, night-nursing can contribute to this disease because the milk bacteria - lactobacilli - lay in the cavities and form their own acid, contributing to more decay. " I should have really worded my statement differently - Breast-milk is *not* what *causes* the decay. We can take this off-list, but I am really interested in the regime that you have regarding this - I have read somewhere before about this, but how do you use White Oak/Black Walnut? As a mouth wash? Do you leave it on/rinse etc. Also, the calc fluor and calc phos - is this in homeopathic form? And did the Ionic toothbrush work? thanks in advance! christina_xz@... __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Jeanne and others, I got a horrible ear infection on MTX that came on suddenly and then my eardrum ruptured. It was nasty. Rae P.S. I just had a chunk fall out of a tooth a few days ago. I've only had one cavity in my life and was just at the dentist in June. I wonder if the Arava causes this. Anyone know???? Re: [ ] Re: IV Remicade Infusion went well Good Morning Everyone, I guess I am a little disappointed with all the info about the Remicade. My first infusion is scheduled for Feb 28th and I thought I would spend my three hours in there and feel like a million bucks the next day. It saddens me to hear some people spend 10 hours and some people flare for a month. Aargh! Also my infusion was delayed for that long because I have an infected tooth ;( I've always taken good care of my teeth and wonder if this off the wall infection is aided by all the medications I currently take--MTX, Folic Acid & Voltaren? Anyone else get weird infections after beginning MTX. I took my 11th shot yesterday. Hoping all are well today, Jeanne In Idaho
Guest guest
tooth decay, infections, etc. are a common result of Sjogren's Syndrome. Sjogren's is an autoimmune process where the glands are affected by arthritic inflammation. It is often seen as a secondary disease with people who already have another autoimmune disease. If you have any problem with dry eyes, mouth, skin, vagina, etc. then SS should be considered. Look for more info about SS at www.arthritis.org and do a search in the archives on this list. For me, SS was diagnosed by my eye doctor. Of course, not everyone with dryness and tooth problems has SS but if you have PA then this should be considered. Hope this helps someone! Guest guest
: Yes! My teeth have been a disaster since my first flare 8 years ago. The fillings fall, they crack and break, my teeth crack and break and generally cause me much grief. I figure in the next year or so I'll need about $7,000 in dental work. I don't know what it is about this disease, but it manages to ravage every part of your body. My teeth will never be the same. Keep at the dentist. If you're always on your dental exams, you should be able to keep it under control. Jen

Guest guest
Sorry for the blank email. The teeth problem idea is new to me. Is it from the Stills or from the meds???? Guest guest
Hi Heidi: Well, I can't speak for anyone else, but my serious teeth problems started directly after my first flare. Thing is, I only had aspirin therapy during my first flare. I took no steroids or anything else (other than pain meds). Maybe the aspirin was the culprit. Who knows? (I was on 3,000 mg aspirin/day). My teeth had always been a problem, but the Still's seems to have exacerbated it. Very depressing. I really hope this flare doesn't completely do them in. In NEED my teeth! I love to eat! Jen B. Guest guest
Yes, I have had my amalgam removed. There is a protocol so that the mercury is not redistributed. I had it done of the course of 8 months. After every quadrant removed I had a bad yeast like rash under my arms. I was guessing my body was detoxing the mercury? Who knows... Guest guest
Speaking of teeth and dental issues, I wonder about anyone who has had dental fillings (amalagams?) replaced with non-toxic (whatever they use)? I read it could be done and subscribe to a mercola.com newsletter that is all about good health (would recommend it to anyone interested) and their office in IL does some procedure to remove and replace them. I only wonder in case I wanted more children. It is only my son with problems now and he's the oldest, but I understand boys are at a disadvantage from testosterone. Judy Teeth problems It's possible children with autism "pull" at their teeth due to dental problems. They may need cavities filled; teeth extracted to relieve overcrowding; braces and retainers. I have another gold crown from years ago again with no problems. Guest guest
I have two bridges also, both upper with three teeth but absolutely no problems at all. I’d advise you to go back to the dentist as it sounds to me the mold taken beforehand may not have been correct or the bridge doesn’t match the mold. Once the bridge is in you shouldn’t feel any discomfort at all. samters From: wkapikorn@... Guest guest
Hi, I've had problems with my teeth since the Samters started. Guest guest
Tami, after your teeth were worked on, did they become extremely painful? I told my dentist yesterday that I may just have them pulled and so now he wants to do a root canal through the bridge. My teeth did not bother me until the bridges were added. Seems there are 4 of us with teeth issues. Maybe it's the steroids and antibiotics. Guest guest
I’d be very wary about root canal work after having a big problem with one I had done about eight years ago. After spending BIG dollars on the tooth I still have issues with it and wouldn’t even consider getting another root canal done. I’d be inclined to get a second opinion because root canals are so very expensive and aren’t always successful. Guest guest
You can rule steroids out on my part. How about infection? I am starting to see such a clear picture of how horrible infection has been in my past, because since Oct. I have been free of an infection. My temp is starting to rise a bit and fatigue is setting in so my infectionless days may be coming to an end. I don't think we ever truly get rid of the infection from taking antibiotics. I think it calms it down a bit, then the infection slowly starts to build it's little army and we think that it's just coming back, not realizing that it's been there all along, just waiting to get us. Okay, that's a bit dramatic, but I've found out recently how wonderful it is, after my last surgery to have a temp around 96.5-97.5 everyday. I've been bumpingup to 98.7 recently so it may be back, but surgery was the only thing in the last many years that completely took away my fever. Not all my surgeries did, just this last one. Guest guest
I have to add something that I just thought of. A few years ago I had an upper tooth on the left that was forever painful. If I got a sinus infection, that tooth really became painful. My dentist thought that I might have an abcess, so he did xrays. However, he did not find an abcess. What he concluded is that the roots in that area went into my sinuses and were effected by my constant, chronic sinus infections. I wouldn't doubt that there is a connection between teeth issues and Samters due to the chronic sinus infections we get. Here I am today, starting another round of Prednisone. Life is good! Guest guest
Jane that’s reminded me of something my dentist has told me as well. A few times I’ve thought I’ve had a toothache when in fact after visiting the dentist, it turned out to be sinus and even he said that the sinus and nerves and roots from the teeth are connected. I’d forgotten about this until you mentioned it. Look on the bright side of taking the prednisone, you’ll get your sense of smell and taste back and it’s wonderful.
