" The medicated child " was on PBS the other night and there's been a huge

discussion on another list. Mostly it involves the " over diagnosis " (some think)

of Bipolar and the actual lack of diagnostic criteria for Bipolar in kids. But

it talks alot about cocktails ofmeds these kids are on and you will recognize

many of our favorites. It's really interesting and enlightening I thought when

the psychiatrists admit they actually have no data to work with in dispensing

meds for these kids. In fact they go so far as to say if they didn't do studies

sponsored by the drug companies we wouldn't have any data at all. I like their

positive proposal for all psyciatrists to come together as did oncologists in

developing cures for childhood cancer. The show is on video at this site.

The show that followed was called " Today's Man " filmed by Lizzy Gottlieb for

Independent Lens films on PBS also. I can't find it online but if it should show

again in your area it is really worth watching. It's about Lizzy's younger

brother who has Aspergers and is now 23 or so. It follows him from babyhood to

the present and some of his insights (especially into TV watching) are amazing.

AS wasn't even a dx till 1998 so these parents were really clueless for so long.

He gives some very articulate insight into autism; he's extremely verbal and

well educated but still........ there are definitely some very familiar aspects

to his story.

That's it from the TV guide section of yoiur list today LOL

Sherry ~ I watched the " medicated chid " the other night too and found it

interesting. Scares me so much though when they talk about some of the meds my

son is on.
