Guest guest
: I still use gates in my kitchen to keep Miss Tori out. Liz home safety Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on child proofing your home. Cole is 7 and the baby proofing stuff does not work anymore. He loves to open the oven door (when cool) and stand on it to get to things in the higher shelf he does the same with the diswasher door. I am afraid he is either going to bend the door and break it, or that the whole thing is going to come off the wall and crush him underneath. I have tried re direction so many times and he is not getting it. as I continue to work on appropriate behavior I'd love to be able to lock these appliances so he can't get in them. The two baby proofing items I used have done nothing to detur him in his efforts to climb. I am also looking for a microwave that may lock, today while at the store, he decided to start the microwave and cook nothing, well my husband came into the kitchen when he heard a pop and noticed our microwave was on fire! No damage to the house thank God, but now I need a new microwave. Any suggestons would be so appreciated, I am starting to fear for his safety and the safety of our family. Thanks
Guest guest
Oh, my gosh, you could be talking about our house! We have gates on both entrances to the kitchen that we have had drill holes in them and put carbeaners through them to keep them out. Logan put an electronic toy in the microwave and fried it over the summer. We found a microwave at Lowe's that locks the when you push the clear/lock button for 3 or 5 seconds and it locks the controls. He can still open the door, but the controls don't work.. For the oven, we use an oven lock that is put out by Safety 1st and Parents. Oven Front Lock. We also use it for our outside doors for another lock as well as closets Logan should not be in and we bring them with us when we travel to use on hotel doors. Good luck! Guest guest
Thanks for the microwave suggestion I am going to go look one up on the Lowes website now!! I unfortunately have one of those open floor plans so I can only gate one side. I did install the safety first lock on the oven this evening hoping that will deter him for a while. Thanks for the help! To: @...: melissad@...: Sat, 19 Jan 2008 20:41:06 -0600Subject: RE: home safety Oh, my gosh, you could be talking about our house! Guest guest
I bought very simple alarms that have a release magnet. When traveling, the alarm goes on the door knob and the friction plate goes in the jam - door opens- alarm goes off. They are sold for travelers to be safe in their hotel rooms - worked great to keep Elie in the hotel room with us. We have a lock on the freezer which requires a two finger squezze to open - it is to make sure WE close the door tight, but would work great to keep a kid out of a fridge, freezer or microwaive. One has to have a really good pincer grip to use this one. On Jan 19, 2008 9:41 PM, L. Davenport wrote: > Oh, my gosh, you could be talking about our house! Guest guest
I am curious which lock you have? We tried all of them and lets say... we got 2 can get into anything! Guest guest
The magnetic door lock I found in a catalogue for travelers - so long ago I have no clue whose it was - but I still see it every now and then. But the one on the freezer is SAFETY 1ST. I think Bob found it at Home Depot - if not must be Walmart - there is nothing else in our town but and ACE HArdware. > I am curious which lock you have? Guest guest
I also had (until we moved) magnetic very loud alarms that were screwed into the door jamb and used 9 volt batteries. These we got at Radio Shack. I believe they were under $15 each. They didn't stop ELie at first, but then I set them to alarm if the door was opened even for a second. The 100 decibals stoppped him in his tracks. Then he started to look to see if the red light (warning that it was alarmed) was on. We were able to leave the key in the lock so we could turn it off when we went out, but if your kids understand locks, I would wear the key around my neck! This at least gave me a headstart when he escaped (unless I was in the bathroom). This too passes eventually. > I am curious which lock you have? Guest guest
once blew our microwave up when he was little too. Since then we have gotten the ones with the digital lock. just punch in the code and he can touch the buttons all he wants and nothing will come on until we put the unlock code in. AS for the stove or dishwasher, I am unsure about this, our electric stove does have a lock for when cleaning mode, I am unsure if a padlock system would compromise your dishwasher or stove, We use to have our fridge padlocked as well as the cupboards but thankfully he pretty much outgrew getting into everything. Hmmm I am eager to see what the others have to say. shawna In a message dated 1/19/2008 2:58:31 P.M. Guest guest
I put child proof door knob covers on all of my doors. is 10 and he still isn't able to open them. I'm probably jinxing myself right now and tomorrow he'll be out the door, LOL. The alarm sounds like a great next step. We used to have a hasp lock on the fridge because he kept emptying it out and child locks on all cabinets. Luckily that stage is over.Terry home safety> > >> > > Hi everyone,> > > I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on child> > > proofing your home. Guest guest
We have a lock on the fridge too. And we have 3 door entrances to our kitchen, all with locks on them to keep her out. We also have a light switch on the inside AND OUTSIDE of her door, so we can control the light from the outside. In the beginning, she would get frustrated by hitting the switch and getting no light, but she'd have it on all night long otherwise. Donna **************Start the year off right. Guest guest
We also have the water temp at the water heater set at 120. My husband and I would like it hotter, but this way when Elie turns his bath on alone, I don't have to worry about burns. Usually he makes it way too cold for me, but I believe in precautions. We moved dressers out of Elie's room when he was throwing clothes around and climbing. Moved the dresser to the hall outside his room. And we had a screen door with hardware cloth on his bedroom with the lock on the outside to prevent night wandering. > We have a lock on the fridge too. Guest guest
We, at one point, had a lock on Logan's light switch, like they do in gymnasiums that needed a key to use the switch. _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of duffey48@...
