Guest guest
Jean! Welcome to our group! Your name sounds SO familiar. Liz-Mom to Tori 7 1/2 yrs! diagnosis and sutism and ds Hi, I am new around here. I have a son who is 15, he was diagnosed with autism when he was fourteen. Sort of late but maybe not. I always knew he had something else and said he was on the spectrum. No one was willing to gove that certain dsas code though. We finally had a teacher who frustrated me soooo much that I packed up and brought him to Dr Capone and had the everything tested for . We were sked and answered thousands of questions. Seems has Down Syndrome, social anxiety disorder and a form of PDD. I feel so validated and is now receiving lots more help and understanding. I want to make t shirts that have DSAIIC on them. We are doing lots better and is doing well. What a relief! I no longer feel so lonely. Our big struggle is fonding an appropriate high school setting for our son. We live in Chester Cty, PA and are working with the IU but want to seek other info. The problem for is that he is quiet and does not have lots or any abberant behaviors that some kids with autism have, but for sure he has everything else that kids with autism have. He may fall through the cracks due to his quiet nature. We have become pit bulls for his defense, not lots of info or full support groups out there for both diagnoses. Got any ideas? I am looking for ideas or any input. Sarno
Guest guest
Sounds like dejavu all over again!!! I lived in Coatesville from the time Elie was 15 until he was 21. Coatesville H/S was a nightmare - too much stim, changing classes, noise. The IU stand alone school was AWFUL - even though these schools were less then 1/2 mile from my door - I " encouraged " the S/D to find an alternative. We checked out Beaver Run (part of Camphill), Melmark, and ended up at ELWYN . A Coatesville bus driver carried our son to ELWYN every day., The bus driver and aid werre wonderful. We had I think 5 kids riding that bus. Elie went there for 6 years until we mved to GA> The OT and SPEECh were good, the director of the middle and h/s were great, some years the teachers were very good, sometimes not. My son did have behavior issues but the school psych helped us write a behavior plan and their behavior managers were fantastic!!!!! Write me off line if you want more particulars about that. > Hi, > > I am new around here. I have a son who is 15, he was > diagnosed with autism when he was fourteen. Sort of late but maybe > not. Guest guest
Hi I think we met at the Buddy Walk at West Goshen Park. Does Gaffney ring a bell??? I have been on this listserve for a while. I am glad things are better for you. I know how difficult it is to get our kid's needs met. It seems the district does not want to challenge Freddie in ways that we do. They push the vocational goals. I realize that they are also important, but................my son is not just a " vocation " . Anyway, what does the IU say? Where is going to school. Take care, diagnosis and sutism and ds Hi, I am new around here. I have a son who is 15, he was diagnosed with autism when he was fourteen. Sort of late but maybe not. Guest guest
Welcome to this listserv. I know you will find support, information and even a few laughs here! My son was just diagnosed this summer at age 12 with ASD (as well as ADHD). We knew he had DS soon after birth, so don't feel it is late at 15. Some here on this list didn't find their suspicions supported until their children were in their adult years! Not an easy diagnosis to get, in some places. Yeah, for you taking the challenge to get the diagnosis needed. My son, DJ, is not the quiet one, but he is very cute, personable and sweet---and content to " do his own thing " and not demand attention. This got us nowhere for the three years in elementary. I finally pushed for a different placement, after visiting several settings. DJ is finally getting some of the attention he needs. will continue to need you to speak for him, so I support you in not letting him " fall through the cracks. " I know others may know what is available where you are at, though I am in CA. You will find support here. I agree with you that I no longer felt alone when I found this group. Hugs, Donnell (mom to DJ, age 12, DS/ASD)
