Guest guest
My 11 year old was very happy to wiggle his loose teeth and they came out promptly without the complications you are describing. My 9 year old does not like to wiggle his loose teeth and he doesn't like it when we try. He has had the same problems you are describing. Our dentist did nothing. Eventually she decided she wanted to have their teeth cleaned while under sedation so she sent us to an orthodontist for his opinion. The orthodontist said that if certain teeth were not out within six months they would need to be removed to help prevent the need for braces. The dentist wanted to pull them immediately but I refused and they did all fall out on their own within the six months he gave us. I did research on this issue and about 30 percent of people with Down syndrome are missing at least on permanent tooth so ex-rays are necessary before any teeth are removed to make sure there is one to replace it. I googled " Down syndrome and missing teeth " or something.this was a while ago. Because our dentist did not know that many children with Down syndrome are missing at least one permanent tooth, we did not go back to her. Also she yelled at us because we saw the wrong partner in the orthodontist office SHE sent us to. I explained we did not have a choice in the matter. It was one of those things, you all have been there. We do need a new dentist because I imagine that they will need to have some teeth removed to prevent the need for orthodontia. The teeth look fine in a smile but I know the ortho was very concerned that they had too many teeth. I just think it is difficult to know when to act and when not to - when is the right time? Some dentists are happy to put our kids under on a very regular basis. I am not yet convinced though I might be with a good dentist. Does your daughter seem like she is in pain? Does she do okay with teeth brushing? If she doesn't seem like she is in pain and she is okay with you brushing her teeth or she does an adequate job herself, she might be a little young for teeth pulling. I am not a professional dentist :-) just telling you what I was told. Im telling you the new teeth behind are really big and noticeable. My daughter was just at the dentist a month ago for a cleaning and the top teeth werent so loose and i did not notice any new ones coming in. Im a little worried about crowding and causing any problems down the road. I just got off the phone with the Dentist office and all she could do was make me an appt for the 26th. I asked her if she could also relay my message to the Dentist in case she decides we dont need to come in and i wont have to pay my copay. i know im sounding cheap but i hate going to an appt. if theyre not going to do anything and on top of that you got to pay the dr. visit! i explained exactly what the situation is so i dont understand why they cant make a decision just by my phone call plus they could see her records and notes from last months visit. geez, im just worried that my daughter might be uncomfortable with the bleeding and more teeth on top of eachother. Has anybody else gone through this???? do you think its alright to wait until the 26th? When she gets a loose tooth, it seems like its loose forever. I would feel so much better if her two teeth would just come out now!

Guest guest
a had the same problem last year. She would not let the dentist look in her mouth, so they went ahead and put her to sleep. To our suprise the dentist was only back for 15 minutes. He came back and told us that her teeth was loose, and that he pulled those and that the ones in the back would move forward since the other teeth are out of the way. Hope this helps..... Guest guest
: Tori had and still has the same problem. When her top 2 teeth were loose, it seemed like forever. We wound up having one pulled because the root was only 1/2 gone, but the dentist wanted me to try and get them out without her intervention. Well, I have now " yanked " 3 of them out. 20 yrs. ago, I had no problem doing this with my oldest, but the first 1 I had to yank on Tori skeeved me!!! I got better as I pulled out the next. Guest guest
I know...What I did was a twist and turn movement. I needed to have help holding her still. We played the wiggle tooth game. I would sing " Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle...give me that tooth! " when we wiggled it. Once I thought it was loose enough is when I would attack. Guest guest
Hi , My son has this going on right now. Ironically, the day we were going to the dentist last month for our 6 month checkup ( a joke!) I noticed he had a tooth on the bottom coming right in behind his eye tooth. He's only lost one tooth, on top in front, and the other top front one is loose. We learned in July that he is missing his two front bottom permanent teeth so it will be interesting to see what happens with the two teeth in the back row on the bottom, baby front teeth, and baby incisors that don't look like they are going anywhere anytime soon. He seems to have a mouthful on the bottom. By the way, will be 9 in April. It doesn't seem to be bothering him so... Guest guest
morning everyone, i hope everyone had a great Easter. ours was great. my great-niece was so enamored with . it was so cute. i want to let everyone know about the segment on the Today show on wednesday, 4/15 regarding autism. also, has anyone's children with ds/a ever had to deal with braces. we had taylor at the orthodontist on thursday and the ideal situation for him is to have two extractions, then spacers, an expander and then braces. it would be a 30 month time length. i just can't see taylor dealing with this and the maintenance. has any of you dealt with this? and if you have, how did it go? michelle > > Subject: dentist > To: > Date: Monday, April 13, 2009, 8:41 AM > My child had 3 teeth pulled. Guest guest
Hello..just wanted to share that my son was very fortunate to have a pediatric dentist who was absolutely wonderful. Just his presence and soft voice calmed down and built a strong level of trust. The dentist's hygienists were all very patient, kind and compassionate. They tried seating him in the chairs in the main section of the office, but eventually they put us in the room with a door because was pretty noisy with fussing and crying due to anxiety and apprehension and the other little patients in the office got a bit upset. This dentist's philosophy was to only do what really needed to be done to keep 's mouth healthy. Though 's lower front teeth are a bit crooked, he saw no need for braces. Neither did he take a panoramic x-ray because he knew would not sit still for it and the dentist does not use strong-arm tactics - if you want to call it that. Now at 18 y/o my son has virtually no fear of dentists and dental work. I thank God for this, because has been through some rough testing over the years and once traumatized, he NEVER forgets the experience. Unfortunately, once turned 18, I had to find him a new dentist, so we are in a 'testing' mode now to try out dentists in hopes of finding another good one. A friend of mine has a son with ds. He has had a number of dental procedures for teeth erupting in the roof of his mouth and braces. They too searched for quite a while for a dentist and orthodontist they could trust would not put their son through unnecessary dental work and have been very lucky to find one. He is handling everything very well. So, for what it is worth, I just wanted to share our experiences with everyone dealing with dentists. Janet, 's mom From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Lori Sent: Monday, April 13, 2009 7:52 AM To: Subject: RE: dentist We have not had good luck with dentists so I am not speaking from the experience of my sons having braces, only some observations about the whole thing. There is a young woman on our Special Olympics basketball team that has braces and it has really affected her ability to speak clearly. From typical for a person with Down syndrome to really poor. I remember the same thing happened to me when I had braces as a kid - got braces one week before a speech competition and I couldn't talk at all. This seems an unfair burden for a person with Down syndrome. Also, there is some thought that for some people to have perfect teeth, the jaw must be broken and reset. Last time I went to the dentist he said, " I can see you had braces but now days we would have broken you jaw and reset it. " A friend of mine had this done for her son and I just don't get it. I look perfectly normal. I have no biting or orthodontia problems. People say I have a great smile what would the point have been?! I'm taken a minimalist approach to orthodontia with my sons. They can pull teeth when there is clearly a situation of overcrowding but as of yet (my boys are 10 and 12) I am not agreeing to anything else. Also, make sure they do x-rays before the pull teeth. One third of people with Down syndrome are missing at least one permanent tooth. Just my 2 cents worth. Guest guest
thanks so much for sharing your experience. sometimes we have to make tough decisions on what is best for our kids. after all the helpful input i got from my questions, i believe we would be better off letting things as they are. if the teeth in the roof of his mouth become a problem, we will then have them extracted. the orthodontist said his oral hygiene was good and he's only had one cavity in his 18 years, so his teeth are in good shape. why take any chances? like your son, taylor doesn't forget anything and if he were to be traumatized by a doctor, that would be a real problem with as many as we have to visit regarding his other health problems. right now, he goes willingly to his doctor appts. he even enjoyed his stay in the hospital when he had pneumonia in february! he wanted to go back! i think he loved the attention. Guest guest
we have had THE WORST experiences with DDSs you can imagine. we've used the versid....and i went back to watch her squirm and scream in the pappoose. Then this DDS would not see any patients using versid unless the primary physician signed off on the risk factors. Can you imagine, using my ped here to be responsible if something went wrong in a dental chair 100 miles away??? Then, we found a man 2 hours away (recommended by the regional center), who was suppose to work well with kids with SNs...the first thing his asst asks when apporoaching molly (who wont even take MEDS willingly) is, with her big nose all screwed up " Is She Autistic? " Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I still havent come to terms with it...how could she ask? Why was her face showing such DISGUST?? The DDS goes on to berate me for not finding a DDS for this poor child that she can get comfortable with. " WHAT do you think I'm trying to DO HERE???? " I ended up getting all teary and angry, and just left the office to Daddy, who actually PAID for that crap. Molly's permanent teeth are finally coming back in the front, although she never lost her primaries (the big ones came in behind the little ones) and next we'll go to St Louis, to a hospital, and have her work done there. On top of everything...she's ground down most of her molars. UGH. I have nothing good to say about DDSs...and my family is in the buisness...I'll let you know how the STL trip goes...I'm almost scared to make the appt. It's like a form of torture to us both.
