I'm in Indianapolis. Where are you Indiana ladies?

Re: repeat DS

,

I could have written much of what you wrote today. I have a

Master's Degree in Social Work and my first job out of college was as

a preschool social worker at an agency that served children and

adults with developmental disabilities. I loved that job and the

clients I worked with. I later worked in the Semi Independent Living

Program and spent a lot of time in the Sheltered Workshop. I

remember saying to God, " I hope you are not preparing me for

something. " Although I loved individuals with developmental

disabilities (and my favorite show in high school was Life Goes On,

it was about a teenager with DS and his family) I did not want my

child to ever be born with DS. Today I I would love for my child to

only have DS as Autism to me seems so much more disabling. Do you

live in Indiana? I would love to meet you and your family and for

you to meet Colton. He is also 12.

Words that reach over and bite - Back in the19....., my husband and I were

young, just married (no kids) but decided to foster children while he was

in graduate school. The SW asked " What kind of behaviors would you find

difficult " . My husband said " I can't stand it when kids don't answer when

spoken to " ......... Need I say more????

No, we live in Kansas City, MO. But we are thinking of coming to the conference

in Indianapolis on Mar. 1.? So we might be able to meet there.? I doubt we will

be able to make a summer picnic, due to 2 family reunions and vacation in the

summer, but I will keep an open mind for now.? It looks like I'm the only one in

the " Central " region.??This area is also known as the Midwest.

Yes, I agree with you.? Just having a kid with DS would be so much easier.? I

imagine everyone on this list would second that.? Before I had my son the only

person I had known with DS was a boy who rode my bus.? He gave me a very bad

impression, having exposed himself to me once on the bus.? He could talk, but

was difficult to understand.

My daughter will be going off to college in August, so we are losing a big help

with .? I saw an article about siblings of kids with special needs, esp. DS

or autism and how they are impacted.? They talked about how being part of a

large family made it easier on the siblings and how it affects them less.? She

is very well-adjusted, in my opinion.?
