Reading Therapy www.neuropathy.org

Dickinson said, " There is no frigate like a book to take you miles away. "

You can press the delete button on your neuropathy symptoms when you become

absorbed in a gripping mystery or romance or an amazing biography. Bibliotherapy

is a term coined by the famous psychiatrist Carl Menninger, who suggested

fiction and nonfiction would help patients cope with their ailments. As with

music, sometimes we want funny, lively entertainment, while at other times we

want to be sent into deeper patterns of thought.

- If you love to read and especially love just-published books, try the magazine

Bookmarks, subtitled " For everyone who hasn't read everything. "

- A free treat for readers is the catalog, Bas Bleu. (Bas bleu in French means

" blue stocking, " a literary woman, and it's pronounced Bah Bluh.) The writing is

witty and informal, and the books listed are special, not mainstream

bestsellers. To get free monthly catalogs visit, www.basbleu.com, or call

800-433-1155.

- Booklist: Recommended Reading for Every Mood, Moment and Reason is the

American Library Association's monthly scoop on what's good to read. It provides

annotated lists to cater to everyone's tastes and personality. Google

" Booklist, " and you can get a free online newsletter as well as one current

magazine.

- If you're looking to sharpen your brain, Book Smart: Your Essential Reading

List for Becoming a Literary Genius in 365 Days, by Jane Mallison, might be a

great way to do just that.* You can order it through Bas Bleu. Read it to take a

break from books on wellness.

- Ezra Pound calls a book " A ball of light in one's hand. " You can collect an

armful of light at your neighborhood Used Book Sales Days, organized by

libraries and sometimes by college alumni groups as fundraisers.
