Guest guest
Sounds like she's getting a lot of good services now. Is it an ABA classroom? The only services we get at home is 1 hour of ABA on the weekends. Are you in New York (every time I see CSE, I assume it is in NY)? We're in NY, Kayla's CSE meeting is next month, her regular special ed teacher went on maternity leave in October and the substitute just quit so Kayla's general evaluation isn't done yet! So I have no idea what they are going to propose for her next year. Guest guest
is in an ABA classroom here in NY. I'd like to ask for 1 hour of ABA at home. is also in a 5+ program and goes to dance once a week and a saturday rec program twice a month so she's getting some socialization outside of her school program. I don't want to overwhelm her with too many activities, everyone needs some down time. Good luck with your meeting. It must have been a tough year for Kayla with all of those switches in school. Thanks. 's Mom > > > > Hello > > > > I'm new to the group. Our daughter is 9 and was dx with DS/ASD-PDD > two > > years ago. Since her dx, she started a new school and has been doing > > better. Guest guest
Ecki, Have you had your child checked out for Apraxia? As like most things, not every child with DS has Apraxia but some of our kids do. Trisha was dx'd with apraxia about 5 years or so ago. You can read more about Apraxia here: _Apraxia-KIDS (a program of The Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association) - Apraxia-KIDS_ (http://www.apraxia-kids.org/) Carol Trishasmom She isn't typical, She's Trisha! (we're in Sullivan County). I wish we had some out of school activities here. There's some in Orange County, but nothing out here in the boonies. Has the ABA helped 's speech? Kayla is nonverbal. She has such a limited amount of ABA right now -- 4 hours in school and 1 hour at home with a certified ABA teacher. Her 1:1 aide runs the trials 2 or 3 times a day, but if she's not there, she doesn't get it at all that day since she's not in an ABA class, it's just something they added because I insisted on it. Guest guest
Hi 's Mom I am exciting to read about your daughter is doing so great progrees in the ABA classroom. We live in Denver Colorado and here are not this kind of classrooms in the publics schools. We are working in ABA program at home (since 4 months ago)and Romina (5y/o DS/ASD, get the dx 6 months ago) is doing better. She learns academics skills (numbers, letters, shapes, matching, labels objects..) very quickly, but still says only 5 clear words (after a lot of prompting. She knows abouts 40 signs but she is using them only in her ABA sessions. I would like to know how was the 'speech before ABA, did she says words?, when did she begin to speak and how she used to comunicate at 5 or 7 years old? What do you think help her to been more verbal now? Sorry for so many questions Thanks Raquel (Romina's mom) > > Hello > > I'm new to the group. Guest guest
Hello Raquel Sorry it took so long to write back. 's spontanous speech has been improving over the last few months. She started sign language at around 2 years old and began to drop the signs as she began to speak, which was more labeling than speaking sentences. Her expressive language still needs alot of work. Begtween the age of 5 - 7 took a horrible turn for the worse. She stopped speaking, was very agressive and stopped smiling. As per the recommendation of her school psychologist, we went to Kennedy Kreiger Institute in Baltimore, MD, and met Dr. Capone. He has been so helpful. He put her on medication which put greatly reduced the agression. He also gave her the dual diagnosis which enabled us to get her into a BOCES program which is ABA based in a small classroom 6:1:2. They also concentrate on DLS more than academics and this seems to keep her frustration level down. She has been doing so much better since then. We continue to visit Dr. Capone every six months and also see a behavioral specialist while we are there who has also helped us trememdously. I hope I answered all your questions. Guest guest
Dear Ecki The ABA setting really seems to have helped . Our meeting went well, they wouldn't approve ABA at home but they did approve 2 home speechs a week over the summer (I guess since speech is school is cut from 5 to 3 x/week over the summer. They'll see if her spontanous speech improves with this and if it does, the committee will readdress this in the Fall to see if it should be added for the rest of the school year. I was happy with that. And, yes, we live on Long Island, NY. Also thank you for another posting letting us know about the upcoming Down Syndrome Conference. We also see Dr. Capone and are looking forward to hearing his sessions during the conference. I'm trying to get a group together to go on Friday but if not my husband and I are going. Thanks for your help 's mom > > > > > > is in an ABA classroom here in NY.
