Guest guest
<<, mom to , who just turned 16 yesterday>> Hi, Everyone........You will have to tell that Gareth and Margaret wishes him a Happy Belated Birthday!!! <<She currently receives speech 5x/week in school, PT, OT, in a 6:1:2 classroom.>> That is a lot for one kid!!! Perhaps it could be enhanced at home with playtime. You don't want to burn her out. How about having the closed caption on for her TV shows. Show her how each word goes with what is being said......she can work on speech that way. Also....how about inclusion IN the school with normal peers to encourage speech/interaction. That would be more beneficial than any sort of therapy at that age. Take care, Everyone. Margaret **************It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms, and advice on AOL Money & Finance. Guest guest
Welcome to the list . I know the feeling of relief I found when I located this list way back in about 1996. I felt like there was a sun in the sky again - that my son as NOT the only " down kid " (ARGGG how I hated to hear that) who behaved as he did. And then I learned about wandering and food fetishes - and the infamous TRS, flop and drop, and all the other wonders of our world. Elie is 23yo now. He doesn't 'wander'. He deliberately leaves! He has food fetishes (as an adult these are called preferences), He doesn't flop and drop - he stops, sits and won't move - again as an adult- he prefers not to move. TRS comes and goes. This week I have been told he is very much into it - for the last month, not at all. The down sides to TRS are - can only do this with video tapes, wears out tape players, VCR tapes are becoming scarce as are tape players and he doesn't really care for DVD's altho we have replaced most of his favorites with DVD's. So we are stockpiling old VCR's we find at yard sales and buy his 'new ' tapes the same way. This should be my biggest problem. > > > Hi, Everyone.........welcome to the group. Guest guest
Welcome to all the newbies! I am Liz, mom to Tori (9 yrs.) who has DS/PDD-NOS/NLD, etc... This is been my life saver since I found them way back when in I think it was late 2003-early 2004 after Tori was formally dxd. It is good to know you are not on this road alone. Guest guest
Thank you Sara! does the flop & drop thing...he's little now (35 lbs), but I can't see me being able to handle it so easily as he grows. At an outing to the zoo we saw a teenage girl w/Down Syndrome who had enough of walking in the sun, and just plopped down and sat. She was too big to try to move, so the group had to wait....don't know how long! My husband & I looked at each other and smiled knowingly....our future before our eyes! I have to say, if I didn't care what other people would think, I would have done the same thing! I think she had the right idea! What is TRS? That's a new term for me. Hope you never run out of VCRs though! > > > Hi, Everyone.... .. ...welcome to the group. Perhaps you could join > us in State College, Pa., for a picnic on July 4th. Guest guest
Yes has this too. The first time I walked by doing this I was amazed. I thought wow if he can do this he can do other things someone just needs to work with him. My kid is a tape rewind genius.
