Guest guest
Matt, Try Vitamin E, 1000 IU daily. Among proven research on helping with pain, it also improves blood flow to muscles, among other things. Since you'll be non-weight bearing, your muscles will still benefit from lack of movement/exercise. Even after your cleared to walk again, Vitamin E is still important. You might also consider taking a general Vitamin for men if you are not already doing so, as your eating pattern may change. Will you be having a bone growth stimulator implanted during the healing? As for supplements, perhaps willowbark.http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/willow-bark-000281.htm or calcium and magnesium. Calcium is a mineral needed by the body for healthy bones, teeth, and proper function of the heart, muscles, and nerves. The body cannot produce calcium; therefore, it must be absorbed through food. Good sources of calcium include Dairy products—low fat or nonfat milk, cheese, and yogurt Dark green leafy vegetables—bok choy and broccoli Calcium fortified foods—orange juice, cereal, bread, soy beverages, and tofu products Nuts—almonds Recommended amount of calcium vary for individuals. Below is a table of adequate intakes as outlined by the National Academy of Science. Recommended Calcium Intakes at http://www.cdc.gov/nutrition/everyone/basics/vitamins/calcium.html Be sure to ask your doctor before beginning supplementation. Guest guest
A podiatrist I was seeing for a toe ulcer told me to take MSM, Methyl Sylfonyl Methane. He told me it promotes cell growth. I take it regularly, 1000mg/day and when I am healing from surgery or a wound, I bump it up to 3000mg/day. The doctors / surgeons are always pleased at how quickly I heal, and always comment about it.. The down side to MSM, from my perspective, is that hair and nails grow quickly as well. Hope this helps. O Supplement that helps with healing? Hello all...Im having surgery on my left foot this week. I'm going have to be non-weight bearing for 6weeks and all that fun stuff....I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any kind of supplement that aids in healing after a surgery and/or aids in bone healing? Any advice to speed up the recovery would be just fantastic! Thanks Matt
Guest guest
Hi Matt, Good luck with the surgery. When I had elbow surgery I took the follow supplements. I am not sure if they did any good but I think I believed they would help, so at least the placebo effect worked for me: - silica - vitamin E - CoQ10 - glucosamine / chondrotin (sp?) I eat a balanced and healthy diet so didn't need to take a multivitamin although I think I did for the first week after surgery. My overall healing process was 12 weeks and I kept up my supplements this full time. Now I am using no supplements save for magnesium, which tends to reduce incident of cramping for me. I have zero problems with my elbow - so I hope the same for you, and a swift and pain free recovery. Donna from London
