Guest guest
Hi Ayesha, Welcome to our little neighborhood on the internet. I am Jayne, mom to who will be 9 on the 22nd of this month. I also have a 16 year old son and an 11 year old daughter. My husband is in the US Air Force and has spent so much time in your Country in Oman. It's nice to finally " meet " someone from there. He also goes to Al Udeid and is currently in Baghdad. Many of the things you speak of are very common with our children, sleepless nights, self-injurous behaviors, grunts and groans, and getting help! All very common here in America as well! Many of the children here take Melatonin and I know that someone will say hello and offer their story about it. Welcome and tell us more about your family, do you have other children? Take care, Jayne Ayesha Zaman wrote: Hi everyone This is ayesha mother of Abdullah 6yrs wid DS n ASD,who is v v dear2me.we live in bahrain(middle east); n Drs here r not that compitent most of them dont even know about Autism.Only 1 dr available for all of his needs who Thank God knows about it.He was diagnosed wid ASD last yr.He had sleep problem frm birth but last yr a person recomended me MELATONIN; i asked the dr who said yes i can giv him widout any side effect but i m still worried;if any1 else has the same problem plz do tell me wat r they using now.Abdullah is non verbal n hav severe behaviour problems like head banging n making funny sounds when need sumthing also biting if v frustrated.I m worried also for his potty training. We have hired 2 behaviour therapists n they r working twice a week wid him.He is showing alot of progress in different things, but dont know when n how to start wid potty training. Can any1 help me on this n when i should expect him to be fully trained. He goes to a day care also only for social interaction. Guest guest
Hi, Ayesha. Welcome! You are a wonderful mom to get Abdullah the care he needs and to find the one doctor who can help! You will find lots of parents on this list who understand. My son is 8 and is potty training. Right now he is doing well at school but having no success at home, which is frustrating for me. His school training is just taking him frequently; he doesn't go when he needs to go on his own. At home, he'll sit on the toilet but produces nothing so far. This is widely varying; some kids train early, some late, some very late. As for melatonin, I know a lot of families use it on their kids. I asked our doctor about it and they thought it would be okay. 's sleep issues improved on Abilify, though, so we haven't tried it since he's sleeping pretty well now. Have they mentioned trying Risperdal or Abilify at all, or do they not recommend psychiatric medication in your country? Those drugs sometimes help with aggressive behaviors, self mutiliation and sleep problems, though every medication affects different individuals differently. Welcome to our list! Guest guest
Hello and welcome to our neighborhood by way of the web! My son Elie is now 22. When he was your son's age, he would not sleep. For years no doctor would prescribe anything. Finally I tried melaatonin. But it didn't work for my son. So we learned about Benadryl (diphenhydrmine) In our country this can be bought without a dr's prescription. IT comes in liquid , pills and capsules. The side effects of this drug are dry mouth and sleepiness. It is an antihistamine. We used it for its sleep effect. This worked wonderfully for years for our son. We have not used it on a regular basis for the last 7 or 8 years because Elie is fainlly able to sleep most nights. We do occasionally use it when traveling - especially when going by plane to help Elie stay calm. He takes no other meds at all. Toilet training: I wish we had had someone to work with him on this issue. It took us many years to train for bowel. He was trained for voiding by age 5 or 6 but it took until about age 15 before he was reliably trained for Bowel. We think that it was an issue of severe low tone rather than him not understanding the process. Hope this helps. > Hi, Ayesha. Welcome! I love new and old members! I have a son who is 15, he was potty trained at about 8 years old. We just kept with him at this task. It did take time. He is very trained at this point and never had accidents once he was trained. It is great to meet people from around the world and always fascinating to myself. Guest guest
Welcome Ayesha! Many people on this site use Melatonin and it is suppose to be safe for long term use. My son Jake started potty training about 6. We started with just going pee on the potty. We take all his clothes off and he faces the toilet tank to pee. He is just this year starting to stand more to pee. He still wears diapers at night. He is not bowel trained yet but has pooped on the potty many times. We also use Miralax to help keep him from getting constipation and regular. This helps with the pooping. Today is Jake's 9th birthday. We use lots of sensory integration technique with him that helps with the stimming. Once again, Welcome! Guest guest
Toileting: I forgot until I saw this note frm Holly. We never taught Elie to stand at the toilet. HE sits for everything. We just felt it was easier and also safer in the US where toilets are private, but urinals are public. On Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 10:50 AM, Holly Giglio wrote: > Welcome Ayesha! Guest guest
Hello Ayesha, Welcome to our community. Many people on here use Melatonin with their children, but I do not need to. My son is DJ, age 12. You are blessed to have received a diagnosis so early in your son's life. We did not get the ASD diagnosis until last summer. We are currently toilet training our son. He is now schedule trained to 1 1/2 hrs apart during the day. He still wears diapers at night. A side benefit is that he often has a bowel movement in the toilet when he is voiding, though he still has bowel movements in his diapers at night, or even sometimes during the day still. You communicate beautifully in your post. You must speak English very well! Do you have other children? The best resource I found for toilet training is the book, Toilet Training for Individuals with Autism and Related Disorders, by Wheeler, M.Ed., which I purchased through Amazon.com. Some things to think about before starting toilet training are: -Is your son physically able to hold himself upright on the toilet, or will he need a smaller toileting chair? -Will he cooperate with dressing and undressing? -Does he have any problems with constipation or other medical problems that need to be taken care of before starting a toileting routine? -how doeas your son communicate? Would pictures of each step be helpful in decreasing anxiety about toileting? -Is your son able to hold his urine for any length of time, say during a nap? Before we started toilet training we took lots of data. We used a chart with times marked down one side and the days marked across the top. We had to check him every half hour and if he was wet we put a U for urine in the time box and a B for bowel in the time box. Over the course of 2 weeks we got a learer picture of how frequently our son was urinating. This helped us to plan when he would be taken to the toilet when we started training. Another helpful book is, " A Work in Progress: Behavior Management Strategies and a Curriculum for Intensive Behavioral Treatment of Autism, " by Ron Leaf and McEachin. It has a chapter on toileting that is good. I also purchased it through Amazon.com. It is good you have a doctor that understands your situation and your son's needs. Tell us about your life and Abdullah's life. Again, welcome! Guest guest
I see that Donnelll sends you the info on her favorite book for toilet training. I used Steps to Independence -Teaching everyday skills to Children with special needs by Baker, et al. I also have bought this thru Amazon.com . The things I like best about this book is that it teches you base line skill marking - know where you are beginning. The next is that one can pick any skill, teach it using their base line data gathering and then learn how to teach a skill. We used and still use it!! I also bought this book for every teacher Elie has had since he was a little boy. Guest guest
-Hi Ayesha, I am new to this group too. Welcome! I have received such wonderful info and support from everyone here. Our daughter has been taking melatonin on and off for several months now. She does sleep better and usually through the night when we give her 2.5 mg of slow release melatonin. It was recommened by her Dr. I did notice when we first started giving it to her she would be more irritable in the mornings but that has subsided and she just seems more rested. It also helped A LOT to have her tonsils and adnoids removed. You mentioned that Abdullah is self injurious. Something else I think most of us can relate to. I know that therapy for sensory issues and given a way to communicate curbed Lynae's headbanging. She also is nonverbal, 7 yrs old. I am in the process of learning Applied Verbal Behaviour. It is based on BF Skinners work. There is a Dr. Carbone in New York who does extensive work in this area. You can look him up on the Internet and see if there is any help if you are interested in that. I have been able to teach my daughter some signs and she is now able to request for some of her wants. I am looking forward to getting better at signing, I know there is more she would like to communicate and she doesn't have the resources. We too are in the potty training stage. I never thought Lynae's constipation would be a blessing but as it turned out she would only have a bowel movement when my husband would give her a supository and that just happened to be just before bed. It happened that she was then accidently trained to have a BM just before bed time and now that she is more regular on her own she has not had a mess in her pants in a year. She will actually takes us to the bathroom when she needs to have one. She also will usually stay dry during the day without wetting. She just holds it till I put her on the potty. I look forward to the day that she lets us know when she needs to urinate. The potty training has been a long hard road for us. We started the process when she was 3 yrs old. I have thrown out chairs to gross to keep anymore. Torn out carpet, thrown away toys; you get the picture. Maybe if I had known about this group before it could have been easier. You have found a great group of parents here along with a great group of kids. Someday it would be fun to have a ds/asd world wide get together. - In , Ayesha Zaman wrote: > > Hi everyone > This is ayesha mother of Abdullah 6yrs wid DS n > ASD,who is v v dear2me.we live in bahrain(middle > east); n Drs here r not that compitent most of them > dont even know about Autism.Only 1 dr available for > all of his needs who Thank God knows about it.He was > diagnosed wid ASD last yr.He had sleep problem frm > birth but last yr a person recomended me MELATONIN; i > asked the dr who said yes i can giv him widout any > side effect but i m still worried;if any1 else has the > same problem plz do tell me wat r they using > now.Abdullah is non verbal n hav severe behaviour > problems like head banging n making funny sounds when > need sumthing also biting if v frustrated.I m worried > also for his potty training. We have hired 2 behaviour > therapists n they r working twice a week wid him.He is > showing alot of progress in different things, but dont > know when n how to start wid potty training. Can any1 > help me on this n when i should expect him to be fully > trained. He goes to a day care also only for social > interaction. > Its nice to have a group like this where v can c other > ppl like us otherwise DS only children r much > different n they dont understand r problem. > Thanx in advance > Love u all > Take care n best regards > Ayesha > > __________________________________________________ >
Guest guest
Hi donnell Thanx for the warm welcome i got frm u ppl.Its really a blessing to find this group bcoz it gives u the feeling that u r not alone n others r also there who have similar issues.. once again thanx alot 4 the reply Yes i do hav another son who is 4yrs old n he is normal n very caring for his elder brother. Regarding potty training issue;i was doing the same things as u mentioned in ur mail i.e making a chart n following the routine.I did this for 1 week n at the end of the week he was holding his urine for almost 2 hrs n doing it in toilet.BUT the problem is he cant express the need to go to loo. After 2 weeks of following the routine i bcame sick n got fever n throat infection,so couldnt continue the routine n he is back to zero now. :-) regarding the things u mentioned -Yes he can hold himself in the toilet completely but dont want to; instead he wants to go inside the bath tub n opens the tap each time we take him there. -Yes he does cooperate for dressing n un dressing. Thanx for recommending me the books;will try to get them. He is completely non verbal n cant make specific gestures for different needs.Just goes to kitchen when he needs sumthing to eat/drink,thats it. His therapists r using PECS n pictures along wid signing but still no progress;doesnt even look at them. BUT STILL I M HAPPY as i know its a looong journey towards independance but good thing is we r going in the right direction. Life here in bahrain is v peacefull n enjoyable as compared to that back in pakistan;Bahrain is a small country with 700,000 population;litercay rate is almost 90%.The only thing v lack is poperly specialised institutes/schools for special needs non ARABS (like Us where Abdullah can go).there is only 1 school that accepts Abdullah n that is also not fully equipped, its more of a day care rather than a school.I just send him there for social interaction but no other benefits. Anyways i guess its enuf 4 today.plz b intouch n also do tell me about urself n ur family n bout ur son.Once again its a great pleasure to b in this group. A BIG HUG & lots of luv Best regards Ayesha --- Donnell Kenworthy wrote: > Hello Ayesha, > > Welcome to our community. Many people on here use > Melatonin with > their children, but I do not need to. Guest guest
Welcome, Ayesha! Potty training is usually a long road for our kids. My son just turned 16 a few weeks ago. We were so excited last night when he went to the bathroom last night by himself w/o anyone telling him to. That is a big first. HURRAY!!! Also, he takes 1 mg of Melatonin every night. This has really helped with his sleep issues, although there are still some nights that he wakes up a few times. He won't come out of his room, but likes to yell or make other noises. The Dr. told me when he was 9 that he could have up to 3 mg, if needed. I usually go with the least amount that works. He used to take off out of the house & wander, like some of the other parents have been mentioning. Once he left the house, walked down the street, across a busy street and a couple of blocks more before someone called the police. We have an issue in that we live in the city of Kansas City, but are very close to the Raytown city limit, so we will have to notify both & give them his photo. He hasn't gotten out of the house in a long time (a few years), so hopefully he has grown out of this. He does seem to want to stay closer to us when we are out in public. When he was younger he liked any man, especially those with a deep voice. Now that he is a teenager, he likes girls and women. This has been & still can be a problem, but our behavior therapist has really helped him to learn to keep his hands to himself. A lot of people will tolerate this, which isn't helping him to learn appropriate behavior. He's cute & fairly small yet, so he can still get away with it. We took him to an indoor water park for his 16th birthday. He really had a good time, although he did have a meltdown once when the many little screaming kids got to be too much for him. Fortunately, this didn't last long & didn't amount to any lasting injuries to my husband or me. He gave me a couple of good kicks though. I'm glad that you have found a Dr. who knows something about autism. Our pediatrician is great and we have helped her to learn a lot about both DS and some about autism. The last time we were in there we saw another Dr. in the practice & he brought in an intern to ask me about the dual dx. It's good when the Dr's realize that they don't know everything & can learn from their patients & families. We all learn from each other here & you can probably teach your Dr. a few things. , mom to 16 DS, PDD-NOS between 0000-00-00 and 9999-99-
Guest guest
I wanted to apologize for my earlier typo on " deliver " in my intro. It was laziness on my part not to reread my post. I always tell people that English is my second language as I am usually not speaking at all but signing. But in the world of keyboarding, I have to admit it is only a typo. Margo
