Guest guest
This may not be helpful, but is there any way that instead of the meds, you can just not take Destiny to Walmart or malls or restaurants? We make a real effort to never have to take Darwyn out to loud crowded places. We grocery shop when he's at school or go to a park instead of a mall. We get takeout unless we can find a babysitter. Sometimes we sneak out when his behaviour interventionist is with him (oh who am I kidding, often I'm running out the door as soon as she arrives and get back just as she is ready to leave) I've found that not taking him to these places makes all of us happier. And then there's no need to worry about meds side effects. I realize this is not always possible, and perhaps impossible for single parents. We find with amazon and grocery delivery we can avoid a lot of shopping and if we have to go to the mall we go right when it opens before it gets busy and we leave as soon as we can. Ignore me completely if this isn't feasible for you. Take care, Mom to Darwyn age 5 DS ASD , Canada lexapro The doctor would like to put Destiny on Lexapro pending an okay from her cardiologist. Has any of your kids been on lexapro and if so how does it help or not. Destiny has got to where going places is just about impossible for her. No restaurants, malls, and no Walmart. the doctor thinks this will help. However when we were at the Down Syndrome clinic they think she should go on Resperdol. The down syndrome clinic is going to send their recommendations and I told him what they said but her doctor say he would rather try Lexapro first. Guest guest
I got into the habit of going to stores as early as possible when they were practically empty and to restaurants as soon as they opened for lunch or for an early dinner when it wouldn't be crowded. Some days she is just not in the mood to go anywhere so that's that. She gradually got better about certain places but it is always easier to leave her behind and not stress out. Other times I tell myself that she needs to be out there so I do a short trip anywhere. She doesn't take meds for anything and even her SIB has improved. I hadn't even noticed it had stopped until one day she bit her hand and I realized she hadn't done that in weeks. If things got really out of control and therapy wasn't working I would try meds. Guest guest
Debbie, Is Destiny self abusive or physically aggressive? If not I (personally and just my opinion and all that stuff) would never try Risperdal. Too many dangerous side effects which we did experience when I, in desperate straits, finally tried it on . We were very fortunate that the side effects were not permanent. There's been some research done on the DS mouse model using Prozac (check the www.changingmindsfoundation.org ) which suggests this med may help to increase neurons in the brain. When our conservative neurologist even mentioned it I decided to try on it particularly because low dose prozac has been rxed (as Sarafem) to help with PMS and has suffered terribly with this. It seems to make her less anxious and to smooth out her " rough " spots...her periods come now without any problem. I know alot of parents on this board have used SSRIs with their kids. I don't know if there's been any study done on Lexapro and neurogenesis but I happen to take it myself and it's a very clean drug. We don't really push to go places that are overwhelming sensorially...tho she's pretty good with it lately...ever since she (finally) let us put earphones on her; now she can tune out the world. Guest guest
PS to debbie: Depending on your insurance or your financial condition you may be able to get the same effects of Lexapro which is still on patent and very expensive, with Celexa, or prozac. Stay away from Paxil if possible. Check this out before you accept a prescription for something you can't afford. JMO Sherry
Guest guest
We have got to where we try to not take her to these places. Husband goes or stays. We take turns doing the errands. Babysitters are few and far between. And then I also run out the door. We can sometimes take her somewhere to eat in the off hours so that it is not as noisy, the problem with that is you cant predict outside enviroment and what might set her off, and someone can always drop a dish or pan. ________________________________ To: Sent: Thu, April 29, 2010 4:00:21 PM Subject: Re: lexapro This may not be helpful, but is there any way that instead of the meds, you can just not take Destiny to Walmart or malls or restaurants? Guest guest
I am strongly opinionated here and I would recommend to go with the doctor who prescribed lexapro....it is better to try a more benign drug.....and see how it goes.......I know it has been said that all drugs can cause troubles but there are definitely safer degrees of drugs...and an antipsychotic drug like risperdal is not something to take lightly......couldn't help chiming in here as I feel a bit passionate about it .....and also I would feel better about a drug that is being prescribed for MY child rather than a drug that is being prescribed to many children on an experimental basis.... AnnieBTW Hi ....I have missed all here...I have been studying for my anatomy and physiology class and have been a bookworm... To: From: debbie.keil@...
