Guest guest
The Down Syndrome & Autistic Spectrum (dI'm wondering if others have been in this situation...my 9-yr old, , is about the size of a 6-yr old; not a big kid. We've been working on toileting for a long time now, and are making some progress at home. At school, things aren't going so well. I just recently learned that they've actually been using a toddler-sized potty (sits on the floor, not on the toilet) at school, because the school toilet is large and has a horseshoe-shaped seat which scares . My initial reaction to learning this was that Gabe needs a similar set-up to what we have at home: a toilet with a foot stool in front of it, rather than a tiny potty chair, with an insert if needed, to help him feel safe and comfortable long enough to actually pee. I would like to request that the school purchase an appropriate insert for their toilet; I could easily provide a footstool. I'm anticipating the school balking at purchasing the insert (the ones that are big enough I can only find through adaptive catalogs), because they are very, very pricey (over $200.00 with shipping). Has anyone else had this problem at school, and if so, what have you done about it? To me, the insert seems an easy fix, but maybe there's a cheaper way that I haven't considered yet. I'd appreciate any feedback! TIA, Joni and kids in CA, incl. , 9, w/ Ds and autism
