Wow! I can relate to the " dangling " issues...Aubrey (10 dstr21, Hearing

Impaired. PDDNOS) would dangle socks (esp SOCCER socks) if she was allowed, a

great part of the day if allowed. So much need for the visual stim...

Last night we were at my brother's. She actually didn't seek out any socks, and

I was amazed...until she found a power cord to dangle. Extremely resourceful...

Anyone given an appropriate " replacement " behavior? We're still pretty new to

this and OT is researching such...

My son is 5 1/2 and was diagnosed almost a year ago with asd. I think

the main thing where I started thinking something is different with

him is the stimming. He was obsessed with electronic/music toys, and

also anything dangly like belts or strings and he would just dangle

them for hours if allowed.

But on the other hand he is also very loving(mainly only toward his

family and people he knows well)and loves kisses and hugs and will

maintain eye contact with us. However, anyone he doesn't know, it is

like they are not even there, he will not even acknowledge. He also

does not play with or acknowledge his peers, although this past year

he has gotten a little better, he still does not really play WITH

them, he is just starting to notice them more. Another thing his OT

at school said was kind of related to the autism spectrum was how

much he loves numbers and letters. Anything to do with the alphabet

or counting and he tunes right into it ( this was something I

discovered by accident, I had no clue how well or fast he responded

with learning the alphabet and numbers). Speech wise he is

progressing, although defintely very delayed. He uses signs also.

The stimming is still our biggest issue, along with his lack of

interaction with his teachers and peers. He isn't so obsessed with

his electronic toys anymore(I really am surprised that he isn't, I

didn't think there was an end in sight:)-but with anything dangly-

belt, string, floppy stuffed animal, etc, he will find a way to stim

with it. Sometimes I just let him, sometimes I try to redirect him.

I had many people tell me that he wasnt on the spectrum, but after

comparing a 'typical' child with DS and my child, there are lots of

differences. Hope this helps a little!

also has the dangling obsession. Using behavior therapy we have gotten

nathan to understand when he is allowed to dangle or when his shoestrings need

to be in his pocket. As for family visiting, we allow it if wanted as keeps him

calm and quiet so we can acutally visit. Even the others know not to mess with

nathan when he has the strings pulled out. As he has gotten older I have noticed

he will even visit a little or play with some of the toys available until kids

get too noisy or rambunctious, then he goes to grandma's room and pulls out his

danglies, lol or now its nice outside, he will go sit on her swing. shawna

Hi everybody!

My son has dangled Woody from Toy Story ever since it came on the market. I

should have bought stock in the company. At age 16, Woody is still a

constant companion. Woody has been a God send when visiting the doctors and

meeting new people. You gotta go through Woody to get to ! I have many a

Woody in various states of amputation. The one he loves at this moment has no

head and no feet. He loves it and won't part with it though I have bribed him

with a new Woody for months now. He's painfully loved and will sit in my

purse while in a restaurant thank goodness. dangles Woody every waking

moment. He uses Woody to interact with movies he likes. I get a kick out

watching with Woody when the Three Stooges are on. of course,

plays

the part of Moe!

Take care all,

Judy

My also dangles socks and cords and has to have one in each hand

but socks are her favorite. She also has to have them the same way and hold

them from the same spot.

What is it with WOODY?!?!?!? Aubrey loves Woody, too!!! We have one (the soft

one from the Disney store) and actually put it into a zippered pillowcase and

wash it in the washer on a gentle cycle because she plays with it so much! We

try to have her have Woody walk on his legs instead of dangle him-the poor toy.

I even bought a brand new one that I just found hiding in my drawer as a

back-up...I had forgot about it. HA!

Another young lady 11, who has DS, one of our AYSO VIP Miracles! also carried a

WOODY doll wherever she went!

This may be one for researchers to explore!!!!!!!!!!!!

You might want to check ebay for Woody toys- here is the tinyurl link

(you might have to copy and paste the link) to a quick search I did

that yielded nearly 800 items:

http://tinyurl.com/6ls57p

Good luck with keeping up with the toy obsessions. Twice I found

necessary items for my son on ebay from England- one was a baby

Godzilla rubber puppet head with movable arms- he had ripped the arms

off his first one. The other thing I found was Sully from Monsters

Inc. that could act as a motion detector. He adored that toy. Boy, is

it ever hard to get rid of things he has outgrown (or no longer

obsesses over) when I have gone to such great lengths to find them, LOL!

Good Morning Holly!

The only place I have found the Woody doll is at Toys R Us. They sell it in

a package that includes the Jessie doll. was dangling Jessie for a

while and has several of her lying around, however Woody is still #1. I think

they also have them at the Disney stores.

Have a great day!

isn't into dangling things but he likes woody and it is the

only animated show he will watch.

AFter years of dealing with modifying behavior I have some words for

thought. Every behavior meets a need. And every behaviior will be

replaced with another " behavior " . So when deciding how to address an

issue make sure you know what you want them to do instead and find

ways to meet the need they were fulfilling with the behavior you want

to limit or eliminate.

Easier said than done.

Hi everybody! My son has dangled Woody from Toy Story ever since it came on the

market. I should have bought stock in the company.

He's painfully loved and will sit in my purse

while in a restaurant thank goodness. dangles Woody every waking moment.

He uses Woody to interact with movies he likes. I get a kick out watching

with Woody when the Three Stooges are on. of course, plays the part of

Moe! Take care all,Judy**************Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL

Autos for fuel-efficient used cars.
