Guest guest
Starting Risperdal was a really hard decision for us because Kayla does NOT have any behavioral issues. She was just " stuck " developmentally. Actually, her dev ped wanted to start her on Risperdal a year ago. I waited until our visit with Dr. Capone to get his opinion before we started. We've seen a huge improvement in Kayla. They've even noticed in school. She's much more social with her peers, even going up to them and offering to share her toys! She engages with her sister, bringing her books to read together. She no longer watches DVDs endlessly or perseverates on her musical flashing toys. She prefers to play with dolls and stuffed animals (not quite true pretend play, she mostly dangles and babbles with them). She's much more attentive and cooperative (except when it comes to ABA which she uses every trick in her book to avoid!). So far the only downfalls have been a disruption in her sleep pattern (she used to sleep through the night and now wakes up around 3 or 4 am many nights) and of course the EATING. I may hold off on the stimulant. My husband is really concerned about how much she's eating, but I'll have to see how much she's gained. She's pretty active for a 4 year old, I guess. She spends a lot of time walking to the kitchen from her room, LOL. We just give her 1 small Glutino pretzel at a time and she likes to suck on them until they are mushy before eating them, so she doesn't eat them very quickly. The dev ped suggested we leave out a plate of healthy snacks for her (carrots, celery, apples, etc.) and I just laughed. Kayla eats like 4 foods and fruits and vegetables aren't among them.
