Guest guest
Hi Mark - Dean here. I have had an ongoing problem with the same thing for probably a couple of years. I had a bakers cyst in my right knee a few years ago and it broke. My calf and even my ankle got infused with the water. Since then, I seem to always have a slight tightness in the calf and some swelling in the knee -- can't seem to get rid of it. The only test that was done on me was an ultrasound of the area. It will show the bakers cyst if it is there. However, it must be done by a medical tech that knows what they are doing which is not always the case as I discovered. I don't remember ever having any heat associated with it though, just pain and discomfort. rheumatic Calf pain Just wandered if any of you have had swollen calves with your RA? I've got a slightly swollen left knee and noticed that my left calf was starting to get stiff and tight a few days ago and then it got more painful, becoming very painful to the slight touch and seemingly painful in one particular area. Also felt warm to the touch. Entire calf felt tight compared to the other one so assume there is some swelling. This one is a new one for me. I wondered if some of the fluid from my knee joint was leaking down into my calf (which I read can happen from a Baker's Cyst that has ruptured, although I'm not aware that I have a Baker's Cyst in that knee). Also concerned that it could be a blood clot as it seems to mimic those signs too, although with all the fish oil, ginger, nsaids, etc that i normally take, I wouldn't think my blood could clot, but ya never know maybe. Am going in to see the doc this afternoon, but though I would see if any of you had had similar experiences, before he pushes me into the hospital for a bunch of tests. Guest guest
Hi there… would you mind further explaining the inflamed vein and the pains you felt with it and what happened and how it was diagnosed…did they do blood work to rule out the blood clot… goodness I have never heard of a vein being inflamed…but will search it out… Thank you for any further information you wish to share Sincerely Sam rheumatic calf pain Geoff here. Been there, done that. Popliteal Cyst, AKA: Baker's Cyst I am well aware of what a Baker's Cyst is and it is not what I have. I saw my Internal medicine doc who told me that it was a mild inflammation of the vein and not a DVT (deep vein thrombosis). Recommended that I apply warm wet compresses to it 3x a day for an hour at a time while keeping leg elevated. Told me to get up and move around more vs sitting too long at computer and to move legs while sitting. Said it should improve in a few days which it seems to be doing. _____________ Mark My Home Page Fox Hill Inn My Digital Photos --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Guest guest
I venture a guess that the weight and sedentary life style could be part of the reason. Try increasing your intake of potassium containing foods, sometimes low potassium levels can cause leg cramps etc. You could also have myofascial pain syndrome, which can cause symptoms like this. I have been instructed by a massage therapist in how to release the myofasia when I am having increasing pain, and that does help. Sandie -- Calf pain Hi all, I am a longtime member, but rarely post. I am hoping you can help me... For awhile my calves have felt very tight, like I need to stretch. Yesterday I was walking and felt a pop in my calf, followed by excrutiating pain. I went to the ER and the doc said I tore my calf muscle. It feels better today after rest, and I can walk again, albeit wobbly. My question is, has anyone else experienced tight calf muscles? Could I be deficient in some vitamin or mineral? This is affecting both calves. I am 34, very overweight, and sedentary--I'm sure this doesn't help. I also have EXTREME lower back pain. I have flat feet and wear flip flops most of the time. Could my flat feet be causing all of this??? Or is it a fibro thing??? ------------------------------------
Guest guest
Along with the weight and lifestyle issues, one of my first suggestions would be to get out of the flip flops!! I know how comfy they are, believe me, BUT they are horrid for your feet and back...........and your calf is right there in between...lol. Your feet need support to do their job. So along with what the other poster suggested, you now have some ideas on how to manage this. Hope they help you. > > Hi all, > > I am a longtime member, but rarely post. Or > is it a fibro thing??? > Hello: I, too, have had a lot of trouble with calf and leg pain and tingling as well. I do not have PAD, but will be having testing for vascular issues. I take magnesium which sometimes helps with the muscle fasiculation or rippling effect. I have been told that this may be neuropathic pain and am currently undergoing testing for small fiber painful axonal neuropathy. This doesn't show up on the usual EMGs that doctors use. You have to have biopsies. I have a friend with post polio syndrome whose symptoms are very similar to mine. He uses neurontin with good results. There is research out there that shows symptoms of CFS/ME are sometimes similar to post polio syndrome. You may want to check this out with your doc or a neurologist. Guest guest
After my fall down the stairs with my grandson in January of 2007, I was left with a pain in my calf also. After all tests came back normal (duh!!) my doctor put me on a trial of Lyrica which helped, proving that it was a type of nerve pain. After fighting the Lyrica (side effects) but unable to stand the calf pain, I worked thru the side effects to the Lyrica and am now fine with it as long as I don't miss a dose or the pain comes back. I found the pain strong enough to affect my lifestyle as it was hard to remain any type of active (not any exercise, just normal daily stuff) so I keep up with the Lyrica and the pain is gone. Don't let my sig tag line fool you, I mostly watch the twins with help from my husband and it is only three morning a week! Guest guest
Michele: I have a RX for Lyrica, but have been afraid to try it. What kind of side effects have you had and did they persist and for how long? Also, what is the dose and the frequency with which you take it? >
Guest guest
I started at 75 mg once a day, then twice a day then 150 mg twice a day when the 75 mg helped. 150 mg twice a day is what I take now. I have low blood pressure, and this just made it worse, I was very dizzy but I needed the pain to go away. I started taking it in the morning, several hours before I had to get up, set my alarm (had it and water by my bed) and then went back to sleep. And in the evening when I did not have to do anything more than go to bed. After a few months, I no longer got the extreme dizziness so I no longer have to get up early to take it. Hope this helps! Guest guest
I have tight calf muscles, too, and they will be painful--sometimes so much I can't sleep. Stretching is the only thing that helps me. I will get knots in the left calf especailly. I have had to have my grandson, who is a massage therapist, release those knots as they are trigger points, and will cause referred pain in other places. If you would like to know how I stretch, please contact me personally at epra72@... I have stretches that I got from doing physical therapy that really help me. You probably should stretch before you do any walking. I have gotten up in the middle of the night before and had to stretch them out. It did work for me. Guest guest
For me the calf pain was one of the first symptoms that I had. After a early spring round of golf I had severe soreness for several days. This happened every time I played.
Guest guest
my calf pain is purely from leg cramps (charlie horses) which hurt from the tips of my toes up to & through my lower back. not sure which is from the cmt vs. my " bad back " (herniations & pinched nerve). no, i do not know what prevents them, but i do know that when i get one through the night i quickly move my heating pad from my lower back and wrap it around my leg. good luck!!! Guest guest
i have been told to try valerian root from drug store and soda water as it contains a little quine [which is good for cramps but too much is not good] ________________________________ From: lanman4choice <no_reply > Sent: Tue, March 30, 2010 8:04:03 AM Subject: Calf Pain  I know many CMT'ers suffer from calf pain. I never had much, but lately it's periodically getting bad. Thought it was the calcium supplements, but took extra magnesium and then cut the calcium to no avail. Do people have any strategy for dealing with this? I know stretching helps and do that, but what else?
Guest guest
I find that drinking plenty of water helps with calf pain and cramps. But a bad side effect of water is getting up in middle of night to go pp.
