Guest guest
I'd call the cardiologist. My son's did this as a babe (he has no repaired defect but is followed for an asymtomatic defect) but if I saw it today, I'd be in the clinic that day. Of course, I'm paranoid as I work for a pediatric cardiologist Kim Subject: Feet Turning Purple bad circulation To: Date: Saturday, August 2, 2008, 12:20 AM Group 's feet have been turning purple. I ask the Dr. yesterday if it could have to do with his heart and he said no it is a circulation problem. had an aseptical defect av canal repair in July of 2003 and he has had no problems. But since the heart Doc always said watch for blue lips, nails, etc I always worry. Anyone else's kids feet do this? Cyndi B
Guest guest
My daughter Amy, 4 had a VSD repair in 2004 so I too am always concerned about blue nails, lips etc. so when her feet seemed to be turning purple a lot I asked her ped about it and she said it was poor circulation. At her yearly app't with the heart doc I asked again and they said the same thing. They had done an echo and ecg and everything looked good so that relieved me. She was also in the hospital for a month with severe pneumonia and I asked every doc that came in about it and they all told me it was poor circulation. Children with down syndrome tend to have purple extremeties sometimes. I still ask every doc we see about it though and always get the same response. Her feet tend to be purple after her naps where she has been laying down and is usually folded in half. Also they are more purple in the winter months when she is cold. Her feet are always cold too. Hope this makes you feel a little better although if you are really worried then make an app't with your heart doc just to ease your mind but I am sure it will be the same answer. Guest guest
One way to make you feel better about poor circulation is to check the pulses - behind the knee, over the ankle bone (it takes a little searching), and on the bony part of the foot where the ankle joins the foot. That will tell you that blood IS getting thru. Also, does it go away when he is more vertical? Does it go away in the bath? All these are signs that there is blood flow. Does he cry as if he is in pain from his feet? Guest guest
, 5, gets this all the time. She had VSD repaired June 2003. All tests are good. I asked the cardio and he said its okay, nothing to worry about. But it has worried staff that works with her, her feet, hands get almost black! If you are worried, I would contact the office, just to make sure. > > > Subject: Feet Turning Purple bad circulation > To: > Date: Saturday, August 2, 2008, 12:20 AM > > > > > > > Group 's feet have been turning purple. Guest guest
Yes it does go away in the tub but even when he stands up his feet are purple and hands to. Could the Diflucan cause this? This is an antifungal med. Guest guest
Ali, You said like me. I have always asked every Doc that I can in contact with also about his feet but they seem more blue/purple for longer periods of time. We are going to KKI Monday so I am going to ask them. Guest guest
Here's an interesting " twist " to this... When I was in my late 20s I was diagnosed with " Raynaulds Syndrome " (sp?!) because my hands and fingers were so discolored as described earlier by most-by a vascular specialist. He put me on a drug usually given to elderly people called " Procardia " ...didn't notice much of a difference... Finally went to the Osteopath. She felt it was caused by cumulative tension in my muscles (I was under a lot of stress at work!) which originated from very tense large muscles in my shoulders down my arms etc...She did some manipulation therapy, sound wave type of therapy and within several treatments it went away... (This was after it was also misdiagnosed as " Tendonitis " and " Carpal Tunnel Syndrome " by other doctors...) If discoloration is not cardio-induced this may be something to look into. Osteopaths do much of the same that Chiropractics do...but are medical docs also...) Guest guest
Cyndi, This has always happened with . Well, since I've known him when he was 6. His skin will get mottled, feet and hands turn purple. It doesn't only happen when it is cold out, sometimes it is when he is sweating. One dr, explained that the part of the brain that is supposed to tell the body to regulate the blood flow to the parts of the body is what may be out of whack when these things happen. In the last few years has also developed black dots on his lower leg and foot. The drs feel this is some breakage of small capillaries. has an artificial mitral valve and so is on anticoagulant meds. They think this may be contributing to this. Karyn Mom to (19) > > Group 's feet have been turning purple. Guest guest
I was also diagnosed with Raynaud's. From what I read, there is primary and secondary. It bothers mainly my feet. In a doctors office, he saw them turn color before his eyes! http://www.raynauds.org/about_raynauds.cfm But, I also have Sjogren's, just diagnosed last month. So I know that it can occur alone, or with other things, especially autoimmune. Funnily enough, Angie's ANA titer is fine, where as mine is elevated, my Rheumatoid Factor is as well as my Sjogren's A factor. We ALL seem to be a bunch of medical mysteries! > > > > Group 's feet have been turning purple. Guest guest
Karyn, Thanks for explaining about . used to get modled but not it is different more purple/blue. I am at KKI this week and I will be asking them their opinion. Thanks again Cyndi B > > Cyndi, > This has always happened with . Well, since I've known him when he > was 6. Guest guest
Sorry I wasn't clear. He also does the purple hands and feet trick. It freaks out a good many people. Guest guest
DR. Capone at KKI said it does not have to do with his heart. Same thing that causes modling and also low blood pressure. Thanks for everyones input. I asked about Raynards syndrome and that was a no. Thanks again.
