I've been having bowel and bladder issues lately, (constipation, urine leakage

and failure to feel he " urge " ) and my doctors suspect it may be a problem with

my autonomic nervous system. I thought CMT only affected the peripheral nerves.

Can it also affect the autonomic nervous system?

Hi Ruth,

I have the same bowel/bladder issues.  My doctor believes it's CMT-related

also.

It's not a dietary issue for me, as I get plenty of fiber & fluids.  I do find,

however, that medications make the problem worse.  Neurontin, for

example, makes the 'urge' and leakage issues much worse...less ability to

feel.  Pain meds slow GI tract, so constipation is worse.  But, I've had both

of these issues for years before I was on any meds, so the meds aren't the

problem...they just make it worse.

For bowel...I've taken Miralax every day for several years now.  It really

helps.  I take half a dose a day, full dose when I'm on opiod pain meds.

Haven't found a good answer for the bladder.  Can't give up the Neurontin.

Doc said bladder surgery could help.  For now, I just try to listen well to my

bladder and empty frequently.
