Guest guest
My son is 5 and he has DS and was just diagnosed with autism. Has anyone done ABA training and if so how successful was it?? It has been recommended by the neuro psych that he do ABA and we are going to be having him start this summer. Any input on it would be helpful. Especially at your son's age, the sooner the better with this type of intervention. My son benefits greatly from ABA/VB even when he had begun at an older age. Keep in mind time includes the time spent with family. It is not just for behavioral issues, it helps teaches the principles on almost anything. Like with communication, self-help skills, social skills, academics & motor. Have you checked out who or where, will this be at home or at a center that provides ABA? If you like some questions to ask, first steps are " What are the therapist going to be doing? Hopefully you will hear something like " pairing " . This is building a good relationship with the child. Preference assessments- Lets the therapist know what the kids likes. These can later be used for reinforces (rewards) when working on programs. Stronger reinforces can be used to evoke language. Limit " free " access to reinforces. Goals will also be implemented/created. Ask also if some of the goals will be carried over as it helps teaches the child to generalize on the areas being worked on. See if there are any parent training or meeting, so that you could carry it over at home and out in the community. A parent's input is part of the goals for ideas for new goals. You will know what to expect, update progress, suggestions for moving forward, more training. If you are reading the post directly from the yahoo group list over on links or files there are some sites to review if you like on ABA. Our son's school has 3 ABA classrooms and they will be offering home training. We're working on setting up a new IEP meeting now that we've decided on ABA it involves a whole new team so once we get the meeting together we'll be able to see how much home training they can provide. I'm so glad to hear that it was successful for your son....that's encouraging. Do you know if there's a place I can look to find some aba workshops...just for my hubby and I to get more information on how it works?? That is wonderful, what state are you in? I am pretty sure one of our wonderful online friends from the listserve will be glad to share where in your area and some of their experiences. It would be great if you asked the team who will be working with your son and the home training of where to receive the training as y'all could be on the same page and you'll know what type of training the team have received. Not to throw you off here but will the team be reporting like a person who has their BCBA? Which stands for “Board Certified Behavior Analyst†and has a credential that began as a state certification. Will not get to much into this as I do not want to overwhelm you with all the ABA lingo which you will learn within time and along with the team working with your son. You'll see that I'll be posting more on VB (Verbal Behavior), depending what type of ABA is being implemented, in some places it could be more just ABA, DTT/Discrete Trial Trainer that Lovass, grandfather to ABA had designed. Until further colleagues came along and design other avenues which one of them is Verbal Behavior the Skinner's Analysis, etc., it has grown tremendously in this field area. Wonderful information on this site when getting started. Like on the history of ABA and thensome. http://www.christinaburkaba.com/index.htm To me any ABA program being implemented into school or home is a Blessing, take advantage of it and please know that it could also be incorporated with other interventions. I'll post a wee bit of sites to review, see if this will help. Verbal Behavior Websites (goods, services, and information): http://www.infeat.org/ABAlinks.htm I'm in Texas where ABA is finally coming around and have to push/battle this type of service. When I wanted to learn more about the ABA intervention as where I live we did not have much back then and I ended up having to travel to other cities where there was a wonderful support group called FEAT (Families for Early Autism Treatment). This has really expanded throughout many cities and states. http://www.feat.org/ The next place if there is one near your area would be looking into CARD. CARD(Center for Autism and Related Disorder). CARD also provides training on a variety of ABA related topics which can be requested through the website as well. http://www.centerforautism.com/ During my rookie years I had the opportunity to attend a 3 day conference where Dr. Carbone who was one of the presenter highly known for Verbal Behavior/Skinner's Analysis approach. I'll post some information. conferences/workshops http://elija.org/conferences.html http://elija.org/jennicasnotes.html Applied Behavior Analysis and Verbal Behavior http://www.autismwebsite.org/aba.htm What is ABA? http://www.withoutavoice.net/aba.html I tend to share so much, hope I do not overwhelm you on what I posted. Hopefully this will help when you meet with the team working with your son, you'll have some questions to ask. On the left hand side if reading directly from the listserve, click under links and you'll find " What is ABA? " , once you click into that link, it will take you to other sites of the ABA information. May I ask what other interventions will be implemented? An OT who specializes with sensory integration disorder or Floortime? Will your son be receiving Speech therapy? If so, find out if the team applying the ABA will be working with the ST. Does the ST have some ABA knowledge, even if it is just the ABC's of ABA. Will all the therapist working with him meet with you the parents and everyone involve meet, not just during IEP meetings. Just wanted to throw this in. Irma,19,DS/ASD
