Guest guest
Hi All- Long time lurker from Guam here. We have finally decided to leave our island home of 20 years to look for better educational opportunities for our son . My company has an office in San Francisco where I will transfer in the next 4-6 months. Just wondering if anyone has experience, good or bad, with Bay Area schools or other resources that we can possibly tap in to. We had a great experience in the Walnut Creek area at Behavior Analyists Inc. the summer before last when we went for an assesment but thus far that is the only resource we know of. Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciatiated! My Best to you all, Chris Mom to , age 12 /DS-ASD/non verbal/hitting puberty/center of our universe
Guest guest
I am mom to DJ, age 13, DS/ASD, and I am located in the Sacramento area. It sounds like you have already been stateside and received some support. As you might know, California has a Regional Center system and that is how many services are provided for residents with developmental disabilities. You must contact your local regional center and go through intake processing to gain from this system for your child. http://www.dds.ca.gov/rc/rclist.cfm will tell you where to go for the area you choose to settle in. The educational system varies from district to district as to what services are offered, but no matter what, they are all governed by IDEA and must follow the same protocols for IEP's. Learning about how to advocate for your child in the system is paramount and there are many supports offered through parent support groups in the area. I have heard of Parents Helping Parents in the Bay area as being a strong supportive organization. You might try contacting them: http://www.php.com/ We have a similar group in Sacramento area but the name and focus is different. Prayers for finding a new home in the states and for finding good educational opportunities for . It must be hard to leave your island home, but I pray you will be blessed with opportunities and open doors here. Hugs, Donnell > > Hi All- > Long time lurker from Guam here.
