Guest guest
Autism group: Advertisers dropping Savage BY DANIEL EDWARD ROSEN http://www.newsday.com/news/local/newyork/ny- nysava0726,0,3274609.story Advocates from Autism United gathered in lower Manhattan Friday to announce a host of advertisers have pulled out of nationally syndicated radio talk show host Savage's show, carried here on WOR-AM. It was little more than a week ago that Savage, who has more than 8 million listeners nationwide, called autism " a fraud, a racket " -- adding that it was a ploy to hide the fact that most kids are brats. " He's nothing more than a schoolyard bully who's never been sent to the principal's office, " state Sen. Craig (D-Port Washington) said at the event in the Financial District. introduced legislation to get a count of autism cases in New York State. Gillmore of Autism United said Savage is " not owning up to being a vicious man. " Savage has said his remarks were taken out of context, and that he wasn't targeting genuinely autistic children. He said he was criticizing doctors and drug companies for over-diagnosing children out of greed, as well as " fakers " hoping for extra benefits. In an interview published on an on! line site, wnd.com, linked to his Web site, he said he'd attacked the " falsely diagnosed cases, the misdiagnosed and the outright fraud artists through a bold parody. " Among the advertisers who will discontinue their support of the show are Sears, Radio Shack, AFLAC, Direct Buy and Home Depot, according to Autism United. Several stations are also believed to have dropped the show -- or will drop it. Among those stations are the Super Talk Network, which will discontinue the show on seven stations in Mississi! ppi, as well as WINA in Charlottesville, Va. Another station, WHK in Cleveland, announced earlier in the week that it was dropping the program. More rallies are expected this weekend, including one in San Francisco and one at City Hall in Manhattan.
