Guest guest
Copied from another list - know that some of our kids are on stimulant meds.: " As some of you are aware that AMA suggested that all children on stimulant medicine be seen by their doctor at least every 90 days. They also requested that a cardio screening be done. So last week, we went to see our doctor and filled out the screening questionnaire. Due my husbands family history of heart problems, we were referred to have a baseline EKG done. This was not problem, it was quick and cheap ($35.00 less than my co-pay). When I got home there was a message that they wanted to see him quickly for a follow up to do a echocardiogram. The EKG showed that he met the criteria for Left Ventricular Hypertrophy and the Echo would determine how severe it was. My heart hit the floor. LVH is what you hear about when an child athlete drops dead at football practice. Children are usually asymptomatic until they die. Long story short, he is fine. It seems like skinny kids like my son and a lot of kids on ADHD meds, will often have an irregular EKG due to the lack of fat and tissue in the chest cavity. The doctor promptly apologized for ruining my holiday weekend! I just wanted to share this with you so if you have a skinny kid that has to get screened, take a deep breath!
