Guest guest
Good afternoon everyone, Ty has been something else the past couple of days. Yesterday night he went through a cleaning spree, but his cleaning sprees are really not cleaning. He dumps the trash can over and I asked him to pick the stuff up, and he started to pick it up and his brother Drew came over to help, well Drew was in his space I guess, and he hit him, Drew hit him back, Ty got mad, slapped himself in the legs, then banged his head on the floor like 3 times and then slapped himself in the face too... It all happened quicker than you can read it it seems... So now he has this red carpet burn mark on his forhead. HE went thru this before, I was hoping we were done with that... So I told them today at school what he had done and he was in a " no " mood today... Well when he got home, his note in his backpack said that he had a bad day. He had throwed fits in the floor, yelled, kicked desk and chairs, he threw his pizza on the ground at lunch, he threw puzzle pieces down and refused to pick them up and then he grabbed another student's glasses and bent them and threw them in the floor which made a lens pop out. I am at lost for words with this, I feel like just crying. So I called his pediatrition and he wants to see us tomorrow at 4:00... I got some papers from him earlier in the week to fill out for Austism and they want me to bring them to the aptt. along with what the teacher has filled out... I called his teacher and she was lost for words too, the only major change he has had recently was synthriod for his thyroid, he was just diagnoised with hypothyroidism. At first the pharmacy filled it for 50 mg, when the script was for 25mg. So for a week he was getting double the dose, I didn't realize this until I called because his behaviour was off the wall... So we went with cutting it in half so he got only 25mg. But we still had to wait for the overdose to get out of his system which shouldv'e been earlier this week... ANybody else deal with this same problem? WEll we will find out something tomorrow I guess. I will let you all know.. ANd I love all the posts that come through here, THis is a very active group... ANd I have learned alot. Thank you to all... I look forward to being here more... Hugs, AMY
Guest guest
Amy, hearing that Ty began getting this upset and the only thing different was the start of Synthroid brought back memories. Our son was almost 23 when he was diagnosed with being severely hypothyroid. That is when he began to get upset over little things like hanging up his coat, and then he began to be self abusive biting his right wrist and scratching his face. He even hit his arm on a table at work when he got upset and it resulted in a fracture. About four years later he had an aggressive episode where he was living. At that time it was decided to put him on Tegretol for the mood swings and then the doctor was able to get the Synthroid to a therapeutic dose. is now 46 and at 41 was diagnosed with autism. A cyber friend psychologist referred me to an article out of Sweden and some research they did that said, " It has been suggested that untreated hypothyroidism from infancy or early childhood may cause autism (Gillberg et al 1992) " The article was Autistic disorders in Down syndrome: background factors and clinical correlates by Peder Rasmussen MD PhD pg 750-754 in Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology 2001. An Abstract of the article can be found at http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract?fromPage=online <http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract?fromPage=online & aid=88 893> & aid=88893 Are you sure the dose of the Synthroid was mg or was it mcg? 1 mg is 1000 micrograms (mcg). I hear your pain and hope you get some answers from the doctor. Guest guest
Amy: When Tori's thyroid went whacko, (sky hi) we thought we lost her totally to the Autism. However, when the thyroid leveled out, she was back. We went through this ago when her thyroid crashed. Until we got her levels back to a norm range, it was hell. Tori always had her levels checked every 6 month..and we still do unless behaviors start to change. When this happens, the levels are the first things we check.
