Guest guest
Dear , I have provisions for an extended school year written in on 's IEP to begin with. Do you have the same and are wondering how we go about defining or altering the plans for those services? This is easier because your district is already expecting to spend the money. Or are you looking to have ESY written in on a current or new IEP? That's a bit more difficult, but the process is the same. With , we initially wrote in two summer programs that I had used before with great success and so we had some plans in place for this summer. Unfortunately, or actually, fortunately, made a good deal more progress in the area of pragmatic language use than we expected and her mood swings responded beautifully to a slight increase in her dosage of Prozac. This nice development led her speech pathologist to believe that the summer camp at the Speech & Language center, although it has always been successful in improving her social skills, might be inappropriate because the group they were expecting had language skills which were much lower than hers. This necessitated a modification to her current IEP, which renews in September. With great difficulty, I managed to hoot and holler loudly enough to convene a " mid-year progress meeting " with my CST. My private providers and 's Montessori teacher bent over backwards to attend. Prior to the meeting, I " coached " each of them on their respective roles. We had to be careful not to make look too good or the district might try to deny her the service. On the other hand, we were requesting an IEP modification which was indicated by virtue of her good progress in a particular area. I imagine I'm not the only parent who feels like a method actor at IEP meetings. The district agreed to our proposal, but of course dragged their heels once the meeting was over, so now I'm the one making all the arrangements and acting as the go-between. I'm sure I'm in good company here too. Whether or not you have ESY written in on your IEP, the procedure we use is pretty much the same. You need to get a meeting together and then portray your child exactly the way you need him or her to look in order to get the district to conclude that " something must be done. " I'm very lucky to have a great relationship with my Child Study Team and they are always receptive to my suggestions. If you have the same, then you probably won't have too much trouble getting the services you want. You just have to get your IEP or IFSP modified in enough time for the administrative hassles (contracts, purchase orders, etc.) to be done before Christmas. I'm not familiar enough with the list members to know anything specific about their children, so I don't really know if this information is helpful to you or not. I decided to send it anyway though since we just went through a change in summer services for and I thought it might be useful to you. Janette Extended School Year Services Does anyone have a specific format they use when requesting summer services for their child? Just wondering what everyone does... I'd like to ask my district for a summer tutor a few days a week, an hour each day. Guest guest
, I will be dealing with the same battle this year. No services for the whole moth of August? Hello? Are you crazy?! (this is what I want to scream at the end of the year IEP's) Last summer, the program supervisor (who was originally the head tutor for our home program) had to assert that my daughter would regress terribly without any structure or socialization during the summer. Is your child eligible for public summer school? I thought all children were. We're going to be doing that but that still leaves several weeks on either end of that with nothing. Good luck, in CA Extended School Year Services > > Does anyone have a specific format they use when requesting summer services > for their child? Just wondering what everyone does...
