Hi Everyone,

My daughter sent me this and I was wondering if anyone has tried it, if so

did it help at all?

Thanks,

Pat/Pennsylvania

Mom,

One of the patients I go to has studied reflexology and she uses it on

people

with Lupus and other diseases and she says it works. I thought maybe it

would

be something you should look into.

Overview of Reflexology

by Judith Worden, RN

Reflexology has been around since ancient civilization. In 1979,

archaeologist Ed Case discovered pictographs dating back to 2000 BC which

documented foot treatments in ancient Egypt. The actual origin of

reflexology, however, still remains a mystery. It seems almost all cultures

used some form of foot treatment as part of their health practices.

Modern reflexology can be traced to Europe during the late 1500s under the

name " zone therapy. " Several books were written on the topic, but it did not

catch on in the United States until an American physician, Dr.

Fitzgerald, mapped out the 10 " zones " of the body. Dr. Fitzgerald discovered

that by putting pressure on certain areas of the body he could perform minor

surgeries without anesthesia. He published several books and articles based

on his research of zone therapy during his career, and taught others this

practice.

Eunice Ingham, who studied with Fitzgerald, actually mapped out the reflex

points of the feet. Considered to be the founder of modern reflexology, she

wrote three books on the subject: Stories the Feet Can Tell; Zone Therapy

and

Gland Reflex; and Stories the Feet Have Told. Ms. Ingham was a primary

educator in zone therapy and lectured on the topic for over 40 years. Then

the trouble began.

In 1968, the state of New York sued Eunice Ingham -- and won -- for

illegally

practicing medicine. A student of Ms. Ingram, Mildred , was sued for

mail fraud when she released her book, Helping Yourself with Foot

Reflexology,

in 1969. This " witch hunt " continued right into the 1980s. Several states

outlawed the practice of reflexology and deemed it " quackery. "

Today, reflexology has gained recognition as a form of bodywork. It is being

practiced in hospitals, complementary health centers and private offices.

Many organizations have been developed to network, educate and accommodate

the growing number of practitioners. There is worldwide research going on in

the field of reflexology, including government-funded programs in Denmark

and

Switzerland, and there are reflexology schools to prepare students for

certification exams. It truly has become accepted as a healing art.

Reflexology is the art and science of enervating over 7000 nerves on the

feet, believed by reflexology practitioners to correspond to every muscle

system or organ in the body. The procedure is non-invasive and focuses on

the

body's natural ability to heal itself. It differs from massage in that it

pushes on pressure points to elicit an autonomic nervous system response or

reflex. This response from the nervous system helps create balance

throughout

the entire body. The body can then begin to heal. Reflexology induces an

optimal state of relaxation, conducive to healing. It can be more relaxing

than a massage.

The cost of a reflexology session can vary from $25 to $60 (US) per hour. In

general, you can expect to be in a comfortable recliner or on a massage

table. The practitioner may massage your feet initially to warm them up.

Then

he will begin to work your reflexes by alternately holding pressure points

for five seconds on and five seconds off, moving from foot to foot. It is

extremely relaxing, and generally does not tickle. You may even fall asleep.

Some of your reflex points may be tender, and it's important to communicate

any discomfort to your reflexologist.

Reflexology can be used for a variety of conditions -- it helps reduce

stress, assists in pain control, balances hormones and can enhance a

person's

mental state. It provides comfort for the terminally ill, and it can

increase

functioning in patients with neurological damage. It may also be effective

in

regulating blood pressure, boosting the immune system, increasing

circulation, and removing toxins. (Due to the nature of the procedure,

caution should be taken if you have diabetes or a history of blood clots.

Please speak with a practitioner for details if you have any medical

problems.)

Reflexology has become an accepted form of bodywork. It can be used as part

of a holistic plan to promote health and well-being in an individual. As

with

all forms of healing, a person must take responsibility for his own healing

process, which includes a balance of body, mind and spirit.

Yes

I have a massage therapist that is also a reflexologist and I use a

reflexologist that works specifically on my feet and hands.

I would say gives some short term relief and an overall good feeling to your

circulation and organs(not to metion Your feet)

I wish I could afford it more often.

I couldn't bear to have anyone touch my feet if they were the least bit

rough. I don't know how they do the treatments but it may work if you don't

have tender feet or could stand the pain of having your feet manipulated.

They arent rough at all Bev.......

I know alot of people who hate their feet touched. I have always loved it

It does really take away the achiness for a while and it really relaxes you.

Just think of all the stress your piggys carry all day..........

They could use a break.........

Dont you think??

June, my feet hurt so much I can barely touch them especially the big toes

and the tendons on top hurt when they come in contact with the tops of my

clogs. I find my feet most affected by my RA. They do hurt but it is

bearable. There is a reflexologist at the hair dressers I go to. I will

ask her about it next time I go. She charges $35.00. I know when I got a

pedicure and the girl massaged my feet and hands it hurt like crazy.

Bev-

My feet are really affected too ...but on the soles of my feet, toe joints,

and ankles.

It hurts to walk on them first thing in the morning and whenever Im idle for

a time.

If your feet hurt that much maybe you wouldnt benefit nor would I push you to

try it if it hurt you that much during your pedicure.

It is different then a massage.

There are certain organs designated in certain spots of your feet and hands

and they are triggered during the process by stimulating those areas. If an

area is tender that will relate to a specific organ in the body.

I dont mean to be judgemental but I wouldnt really try one in a beauty

parlor. I would search around just as you would any doctor of specialties.

Im not saying the one in your beauty parlor isnt qualified(she gcould be

incredible). It just wouldnt be the place I would look for one.

I got mine through a series of friends (one has MS). She was trained in

Israel and takes her art quite seriously right down to soaking your feet in

specially treated water baths.

If your feet are that painfully sensitive...please dont put yourself through

it

June,

My feet used to hurt terribly on the bottom like yours do now. It felt like

I was walking on marbles but now they hurt more on the top in the tendons and

the toes hurt. I have osteo in my big toes and can't push off on my toes

when I walk. I have found well cushioned walking shoes has helped the

bottoms of my feet where I can now walk barefooted and not have them hurt so

much.

Maybe you will get some relief from the soles of your feet hurting. Perhaps

the RA moves to another spot on the foot. I just know the bottoms of my

feet are 80% better. I still gel though after sitting for awhile.

Info and charts here

I used to self-treat with refloxology and self-accupressure massage

(still do, but hard to set aside the time for it with a busy family). I feel

it helped me quite a bit at times. If you cannot afford to go to someone,

maybe you could try it yourself. The only difficulty I have with it is that

my fingers sometimes do not cooperate without pain.

You might be surprised to find some very tender spots in areas where

you have cooresponding health problems! One advantage is to doing it to

yourself is that you can gauge how much pressure you can stand. The

disadvantage of course is that you don't have the training in it, but what

could it hurt to try? Liz G

Hi...i have used reflexology and have enjoyed it. If you don't drink plenty of fluids after, then the toxins released can hurt you and make you tired.....good luck....

Hey anybody out there ever tried reflexology for AIH? I have been twice now been very very tired after each session, but nothing else so far. Part of me is a bit scared I could be irratating my liver by doing this. Feedback is allways welcomed.Lynne AIH Apr02Winnipeg, Can

Lynne-What I've turned to is an iridologist, which is kind of along the same

principals as reflexology, in reflexology they use the foot, and in

iridology they use the eye, and supposedly by looking in there they can tell

you what's wrong with you, which I think is somewhat a bunch of stuff, BUT

what they give you in terms of supplements to take seem to be the same

things I have heard good things about. I went armed with Dr.

Palmer's book and turned to the " bad herbs " section, and turned down

anything with those ingredients, but certainly the no sugar no white flour

diet is good for anybody who can keep up-which is not me, I guarentee you,

but I'll do as well as I can. We have to take an active role in our health.

I firmly believe that. Hope what you'retrying works well. Cathie

,

I broke my back at L1 & T6, with minor fractures of the pedicles at L2-L5 on

Feb 15 of this year. Yes, the day after Valentine's. I've been told it's a

miracle I'm not paralyzed. Now I'm walking, no cane, no brace! Life is

sooooooo good! I see my doc every week; he's still undecided about surgery

at L1. PT helps so much. My doc says I'll always have pain at L1 (he got

that right!!), but those are the breaks. I just push through the pain.

Actually, medical marijuana is a good idea for MS. One of my girlfriends

has started using it.

I'm sure it is good for MS but if you knew my mom you'd know why it's not even a

consideration, she's a BAD ex smoker, quit when I was little, so maybe 30yrs

ago, I dunno exactly when... you can stand behind her now with a lit cigarette

and she won't notice till she turns around and sees it, then it's non-stop

coughing. When I had Kaylee's first birthday at a park, I have a pic of me

standing behind her, her back to me and my sister in law facing me... I had a

smoke in my hand, just happened somehow I don't remember that she was right in

front of me. Anyhow, until she turned around she never even winced, we laugh

about it a lot sometimes (not in a bad way, you'd have to be here to know how I

mean). I'm sure some of it does bother her but tho she doesn't know this , we

all know a big part of it is in her head. Anyhow, feeling that strongly against

smoking she'll try and go thru anything but smoking marijuana is not an option,

never will be, but glad to hear it helps others :)
