Guest guest
This is a tricky one as he's been in love with this book for 11 years. Beating a perseverative behavior is difficult with any child, and especially difficult if he's had it for so long. Have you tried the PECS Wait system? It's difficult to explain by typing, but if you've not tried it, I could try and explain it to you, just let me know. Other than that, will he tolerate photocopies of the pages to rip instead of the book itself? Can he get the same satisfaction from ripping copies vs the real deal? That at last would save you a lot of money on that book. > We have the living book, videos, audios, scanned copies and in the > past, laminated copies. Guest guest
I love a challenge, hmmm, when i redirect nathan i do it immediately, especially if having a tantrum like for food or a game etc, i think of something i know he likes and redirect immediately, like he will be yellling about a snack and its not time for a snack, i will say something like oh i think schooby doo is coming on pretty soon, lets go see, where is your dvd player, or where is your wcw game, want to play some uno with me, the list goes on. I know it will be hard, but i would get a book and every time he goes to rip it, give him a tablet and intruct him he is allowed to rip this not the book, make social stories about it too, rip the notebook not the reading book, have the school involved too. Also does he do any sensory integration throughout the day? replacing this ripping sensation with others throughout the day may also help decrease this. when nathan was very into dangling his strings, we had to put a timer on it for him he had to keep them in a basket on the entertainment stand and in his pocket at school until he did his tasks and then was allowed a few minutes with a timer to stim and then be done. he still stims on occasion, but nothing like he did when he was younger, infact rarely asks for them lately. hope this helps, i know someone else on the list will help come up with something that may help. shawna Wishing all a very Merry Chirstmas! http://sewshawna.blogspot.com ________________________________ To: Sent: Tuesday, December 9, 2008 9:59:12 PM Subject: Re: Perseveration help..... We have the living book, videos, audios, scanned copies and in the past, laminated copies. He likes the feel and sound of tearing the book. I equate his need for the book as an alcoholics need for booze. He goes through a ritual - he goes through the book first. Then he tears about 1/2 inch at the top throughout the book, then he tears the pages out completely (at an angel). He'll line them up in a circle or he'll throw them up in the air (with a fan pushing the pages several feet away) and repeat the process. He can go weeks without the book. He can get through the school day knowing it's in his bookbag. I probably buy 30 copies each year, if not more. He's had the fascination with green eggs and ham since he was four years old (that is him in Libby Kumin's communication book) and he is now 15. Sometimes I can substitute with a magazine. When I got him the book the other day, he also asked for One Fish, Two Fish. I told him we'd get it when we went to the doctors. As soon as we got to the doctors, he started in with the " I want a book " . He hit me several times while at the same time loving up to me. I really think at this point in time, he is drugged up from new medications or he wouldn't have hit me. I just want to know how to redirct him when he gets stuck. btW, the kid is so strong, he will tear up the thick laminated pages and anything sewn. shawna@...> wrote: > > nathan is also a huge green eggs and ham fan, has i think 4 books, a living book for the computer, and a video.
