TYREE April 11, 2010 NORMAN — As Truman scholars, University of Oklahoma students Caleb Gayle and Austin Slaymaker will receive big-time scholarships to help them achieve big-time goals. http://newsok.com/ou-students-receive-scholarships/article/3452975 Truman scholarships are worth $30,000 for graduate study to recipients who plan to have careers in government or the nonprofit sector. Only 60 are chosen each year, and this marks the first time OU had two Truman scholars in one year. Slaymaker, of Blanchard, hopes to study law at Columbia University and public administration at Harvard University's F. Kennedy School of Government before becoming a college professor and serving in the Oklahoma Legislature. " I'm really looking forward to the future, my career and the possibilities for making a difference in other people's lives, " he said. " The Truman scholarship will help me propel those goals forward. " Slaymaker walks with crutches due to a genetic neuromuscular disorder called Charcot-Marie-Tooth, but he said the condition has been a non-issue with his education at OU. " This (application) process really helps you fine-tune the articulation of your goals, " Slaymaker said. " I hope this inspires some other students to strive for and attain success. " Gayle is a Tulsa resident who wants to earn a Ph.D. in foreign policy with a specialty in development of foreign aid, so he can work at the World Bank or the U.S. State Department in a position that helps developing countries.
