Guest guest
Hi Joni I am just throwing this out there as a suggestion even though it probably isn't it but I was wondering if Nick has any seizure disorders? I know seizures are unrelated to respitory etc but awhile back Amy kept needing to have a nap about 20 min after she woke up and then again at school in late morning and then again in the afternoons. She too had a cold at the time and we are also looking into possible sleep apnea issues so we just thought it was all of that. Turns out she was having absence seizures (staring spells) which were making her tired. Since increasing her seizure meds she has been awake more often. I also agree about the reflux too as Amy had that as well and had reoccuring pneumonias and problems sleeping at night as a result. Good luck with finding out what is wrong. Guest guest
Joni, Just wondering if Nick has had annual thyroid tests done? I do not see his age listed so I am just going to use my son as an example here. When I became DJ's mommy ( he was 2) I had a complete multi disciplinary work up done at the Marcus Center DS Clinic which was at the time very similar to Kennedy Kreiger. He was seen by everyone from the dept head of genetics to behavior dept. It took days. I mention this because these doctors were not only very thorough but provided me with info that has helped us thru the years. A couple of things they mentioned is by virtue of the down syndrome many times peds may mistake thyroid problem characteristics with typical ds characteristics. (Examples being fatigue, weight dry skin etc) Another thing was that again due to ds, our guys immune systems are impacted. Takes them longer to get well or shake a cold or be more susceptical to illnesses. This info served me well, especially when DJ started acting more tired than usual. He was always underweight but suddenly started gaining weight. It took almost a year for me to convince my pediatricians that something was wrong based on the weight gain & fatigue. DJ was going into 5th grade when one of the ped doctors actually listened & realized how much wt he had gained from Sept to Aug. Ordered blood test. The blood tests showed that his thyroid had stopped working. DJ now sees a endocrine specialist, takes thyroid meds & will for life. Somewhere between thyroid tests (Aug-Aug), his thyroid stopped working & the peds just attributed the wt gain/fatigue to " being downs " . I am not saying that your Nick has any problems. I am VALIDATING your concerns as a Mom. You know your child better than anyone-his habits, his ways. Please tell your ped ALL your concerns & do not feel silly or bad doing so. Remind them of his heart & the need for thyroid tests, how often he has been ill, etc. Once everything else is ruled out it may just be that compromised immune system needs a break & time to get back to 100%. Guest guest
i would request a full work up if its been this long, cbc, chem 8 or 14, thyroid, and maybe even a blood culture to make sure not septic or anything. I know ther is lots of strep pneomonia going around whre i live and its taking several weeks to recover for most of these patients. will keep nick in my thoughts and prayers he feels better very soon, shawna Wishing all a very Merry Chirstmas! http://sewshawna.blogspot.com ________________________________ To: Sent: Wednesday, December 10, 2008 4:21:57 PM Subject: Ongoing minor (?) illness Nick has been sickly for the past 4 months, upper resp., sinus inf., pneumonia, etc. Most recently a sinus infection, started with augmentin then switched to zithromax, when Nick refused to take Aug. Guest guest
Ask for bloodwork. The fatigue and frequent illnesses need a CBC to check out to rule out a bunch of things, including leukemia, and it wouldn't hurt to check his chemistries and thyroid level too. If the bloodwork shows nothing out of whack, I'd check with the cardiologist. It really is not normal for a little boy to be so fatigued, though I'm not sure how old Nick is.
